Cam Recommendation

I will be rebuilding the original 4V 289 out of the 1967 Mustang I'm restoring.

I was wondering if I could find a cam that wont sacrifice fuel consumption, but will still improve over original performance. This car will be for light cruising only, so any torque/HP added in the low- to mid-range would be welcome.

The stock heads will be ported, three angle valve job, but no larger valves installed. The Stock Autolite 4300 carburetor, intake- and exhaust manifolds will remain to keep the engine's original appearance, ass will the stock stall converter and the 3.00 axle ratio. I do plan on adding a Pertronix Ignitor and dual exhausts, and roller(tip) rockers if they fit under the stock valve covers.

Can you recommend a cam for my setup? Would retrofitting a hydro roller cam & lifers be worthwhile?

I don't think that roller rockers generally fit under stock valve covers... but after market ones are not that bad on eBay....

I like chilly's cam choice for your combo, also. A roller tip will probably work with your stock valve covers, might need to dimple the baffles slightly.

Do your self a favor though and ditch the 4300. They can be a real bitch to tune. If you're hell bent on using an Autolite, use a 4100. Otherwise go with Holley 600.

The roller tip rockers will fit under the stock valve covers.I've got a set on my 68.A set of headers and a decent exhaust system would really help out your other mods.

I wouldn't waist the money on the rockers the motor is not going to spin enough to make them worth the doe. The stockers will work just fine with that cam.

Cam Recommendation

Thanks guys,

I just got word back from comp cams online cam recommendation form, and they suggested a cam with 212/216 duration. I think I like chilly's reecommendation better

Is the 4300 Autolite so hard to tune? I plan to have the car on a friends dynojet chassis dynometer after it all is done, to set it up properly with the help of my father. He has 30+ years of experience as a motorcycle tuner/mechanic. If he can't tune that 4300 properly, I'll might get a 4100

I think I'll spring for some roller tip rockers, it never hurts to reduce some friction. Should I get a brand-name roller tip, or would those $60,- off ebay be any good?

The 4300 was an emissions type carb that was used to replace the 4100. However, they use a mechanical secondary with a vaccuum controlled air door. They have a tendency to go lean and bog out, and they aren't known for being responsive to jet changes. Many of them hit the trash can right off the showroom floor inexchange for a Holley. But, if you have it, it's worth a try.

The 4100 is very similiar to the Holley 4010 series carbs. Very simple and tunable.

I'd go with a brand name rocker. Money spent now could be money saved later. I ran some Comps roller tips for about 80K miles, they looked brand new when I killed the engine they were on. It was a daily driver that went 6000+ rpm a lot.

Also, you should really run a cam with more duration on the exhaust side than the Comp recommendation, *especially* with stock exhaust manifolds. The logs just don't flow.

We run a 204/214 cam in the 302 and it does very well with the stock converter, unported heads, 600 Eb carb and 3.0 rear. BUT, the car would really like an 11" 2400 converter, like the TCI Break-a-way.

On the rocker/cover subject, make sure the PCV has a baffle under it, as well as the oil filler cap. Rockers CAN fit under the stock covers but they also tend to throw oil up into the PCV and the filler cap, giving you respectively; a) smoke from the exhaust which really scares you until you realise it is oil being pulled through the carby from the PCV tube and b) smoke from under the bonnet where the oil is dripping out of the filler cap onto the manifold: also scary as hell.
