my damn starter keeps turning!!!!!!!!

I haven't driven the Fairlane in about a week due to the rain we've been having. So I decided to go and start it up yesterday. But when I started it up, the engine runs, but the starter keeps turning as well. I don't know what is going on with the starter. Has anybody had this problem?

I know it can start when it's in gear. lol So that's not the problem. I had to turn the key to have the starter turn off. I haven't taken a look at it yet. I figure with my truck it's not that big of a deal to get it running yet. But thanks for the help.

Now I have another problem, I replaced the starter as well as the solenoid. But while I did this, I f#%!ed up. I switched the red wire with blue stripe and the brown wire. I put the wire that was supposed to go the the "S" terminal to the "I" terminal and so on.

Now the engine turns as well as the starter, again. But then I noticed the two wires were switched, so I switched them back, and the starter won't turn at all. I checked for any blown fuses, but I did not find any. What's my problem now?

double ck.your wiring. if the ign.& start wires are reversed the starter will not engage because the solenoid will not work. it shouldn,t hurt anything-fuses,etc. it just won,t work. one thing not mentioned that can cause the starter to hang on is a faulty ground connection.

I went back and refered to a wiring diagram I drew a while back I have it's wired correcty now, but the starter won't turn. But just for sits and giggles, I switched the wires to see what it would do and the starter cranks but will not stop cranking when the two wires are incorrect. What's going on?

a couple things to ck. start by checking the start wire circuit with a light or v/m. you should have 12volts on the start wire when switch is held in start position. this wire on s post of solenoid. leave other small wire off solenoid temporarily,(it is for ignition feed only-does not affect cranking)
if you replaced solenoid check it closely.
there are two types of solenoids(they look identical)grounded base and ungrounded base. you must have grounded base type. to test for grounded base take ohm reading from s post to mount bracket.

Okay I went to the locl audio shop that I got the solenoid from, and they said it is a grounded base, so I bought another one. Alos a new starter, cleaned the terminal on the battery, and all the conections. I wired it correctly, double checked it, then tried to fire it up. Nothing. Checked the battery and it's good. Still nothing. WTF!! This piece of **** won't start.

BTW I pulled the dash and checked the wiring harness. It checks out okay, but I did notice a black wire that was broken, and I cannot find were it went to. It comes from the headlight switch, and it's black so I assume it is a ground wire. So I put the key in the ignition, and tunrned it on, but did not crank it. While it was on, I grounded the wire and it sparked! WTF!! I don't think a loose wire from the headlight switch can affect the starter can it? I need help. I may just get a new wiring harness if I can figure this **** out.

do this basic test. remove wires from both small post on relay/sol. with all other cables hooked up. manually connect the battery post of sol. to the small s post of sol. with screwdriver, pliers,or piece of heavy insulated wire. it will spark, starter should engage and turn motor. if it works this way your problem is in the circuit from ign.switch to relay s post.this circuit includes the neutral saftey switch. if starter does not work manually you have a problem between battery and starter. your engine should have a ground strap somewhere to the firewall or fender. I have seen weird problems when this strap/cable has been left off or has bad connection.remember to put car in neutral or park for above test.
