Need Ford 9" Rear Specs for Conversion

I've always heard great things about Ford 9" rear ends and I'm interested in installing one behind the 72 Plymouth Roadrunner I'm restoring. Chrysler 8 3/4" rear ends are becoming impractical due to them getting harder to find and more expensive. Gotta love the drop-out 3rd member though!

What I'd like to do is find a factory Ford match. I'd imagine this is probably an expert question but I'm sure someone could steer me in the right direction. The housing width I would need is 57.8" flange-to-flange and the perch-to-perch width (center to center) is 47.3".

I just need something pretty close. Could anyone help?

TIA,
Josh

Check this link out.

Sounds like you are needing a 57-59 Ford rear end like a lot of the Early Mustang guys.

Thanks Larry. That chart is pretty good but it doesn't make any mention of perch width, and especially doesn't clarify whether "axle length" is flange-to-flange width, drum-to-drum width, track width or what. Whatever it is, its definitely not axle length. I'm sure the axle length is around 30".

I believe the dimensions given are flange to flange. I have a '74 maverick 8" in my falcon, and I beleive it was 56.5" flange to flange as shown in the table.

On a ford rear end, the housing flange to flange can generally be guess at since most all of the 9" used 2.36" (per side) for the measurement from the housing flange to the front side of the saxle flange. But, the kicker is the backing plates for the brakes may make this measurement smaller.

Most of the times, the perchs are never in the right place. You can get new ones from Jegs or Summit for less that $25.

And don't be so picky......lol.....I never intended for my answer to be the gospel and for no ones else to reply.......was just giving you a starting point.

Use the rear measurements on your mustang as a starting point. I'm thinking you'll need a wider unit than one to fit an earlier mustang as they were 52" flange to flange. Something from a 71-73 stang may be a possibility, maybe even a Torino from 68-69. Good luck.

Thanks to everyone who responded. My apologies if I seemed a bit unhappy at the first page posted, I felt that it was a shame to see such great information without the essential details. Anyhow I got the info that I was looking for, thanks again!
