AOD tranny tip.

For anyone running an AOD, AODE or 4R70W, if you feel a slight shudder on hills or at a certain RPM, do not get talked into a $1600 rebuild. I did, then I took a transmission repair class at my local Votech and the instructor told me that it is a common problem called torque converter shudder. You can buy an additive to put in your tranny fluid that should take care of the problem but if this doesn't fix it try a new torque converter. I could have saved $1500 if I had known.

AOD tranny tip.

Also, these OD transmissions should only use Mercon V type fluid. The earlier AODs did not come with it, but Ford service will tell you it is a big improvement for the OD trans. It should NOT be used on in the non OD transmissions, since they use different type seals, and will leak with Mercon V after some time.

AOD tranny tip.

One final tip...When you change the fluid, make sure you drain the converter, too. Otherwise, the problem will reoccur in just a few thousand miles.

AOD tranny tip.

I fixed my shuddering problem with just a simple fluid change. No additives.
I wonder how many people get suckered every year by this.
