what is this trans??
I think the '86 Rangers came with a carb'd 2.3L (I can't recall when it switched to EFI), or a carb'd 2.8L. (I don't think they went to the EFI 2.9L until '87) They also had a 2.3L deisel, and a carb'd 2.0L as well about the same time. I don't think any of these engines were rated more than 140hp. If I recall from my Ranger days, the Toyo Koygo trans was the one to get from the three that were offered (There was another Mazda trans that was one piece bellhousing/trans) and a Mitsu trans. I know they used the one piece Mazda behind the 4.0L. I ended up mating the one piece Mazda to a 2.8L, which was never offered (4.0L and 2.8L had same trans bolt pattern), by getting the case swapped. My '92 Aerostar was rated somewhere around 200hp with a 4.0L. I don't know if the Toyo was ever built internally to handle much more than the 2.3L & 2.8L. Remembering what I ended up doing to the Mazda one piece in my Ranger, I doubt it would hold up for long behind a small block, not sure if you could find a bellhousing either for the Toyo.
