Make sure you are completely in tune. Almost that exact same setup on the Falcon (long ago, pipe size and all excpet for 3.25 gears) pulled 14~15mpg. Make sure that your timing is to spec and that the carb is clean and set up correctly. If there are a lot of miles on the 302, there could be slack in the timing chain which will retard the cam and hurt mileage.

If you ask me,get rid of that dual vacuum advance. They invented them to get better smog results but they hurt gas milage badly. The advance is very much retarded by the second port.Maybe you can convert it too advance only.Should be easy.Try too advance your timing until you hear a short ping under full load, maybe up hill with 5 people in it.Just before the auto kicks back into second. Then readjust the idle and your done.IMO the point for best mileage+performance(If you have no light, marks etc..)And try to check everything above,of course.
Good Luck

Theres a advance and a retard port.Block the retard port.Whithout the cap, applying vacuum, you can see "whos who".Mostly the straight one is for advance, retard is more on the side.

...I can't tell the ammount of degrees there is, there is only a little piece of metal by harmonic balancer with no numbers. I timed it on that piece of metal...
</BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE>

Can you elaborate a little on how you set the timing? It sounds like you set it so the single pointer is pointing to somewhere on the balancer... does the balancer have degree marks? If there's a chance you're running zero advance, that'll SERIOUSLY mess up your mileage. Do you ever hear it detonating/pinging? If not, try increasing the timing a couple degrees at a time 'till it pings under light/moderate load, then back it off a couple degrees. Also, you'll probably have to turn down your idle a little if you end up adding very much timing. Good luck

I adjusted it so the white degree mark is right on the pointer.
BTW Thanks for all the replys.

And do you know if the white degree mark is at zero degrees, or 10 degrees, or ? Is there only a single white mark and nothing more on the balancer?

I'd climb under the car and wipe off the grime on the balancer to find out where the white stripe is in degrees.

When I tune my cars, I generally put two stripes on the balancer. One at 10* and one at *40 degrees. Your balancer should have degree marks stamped in to make this possible. That way I can tune for the initial timing, the total timing, and the speed at which the total timing comes in. Trial and error will find the happy spot for each of these, and when the engine is happy, your wallet will be happy too.
