Need help on final cam choice

It was suggested I call a tech help line. I called Comp Cams, talked to three different guys and guess what? I got four different suggestions. One of them said he was the best Ford techman there. I didn't call Crane or Lunati because I figured the outcome would be the same.

This is the engine combo I have:
D1VE block - block has not been 0-decked, (will 0-deck block next time around.)
TRW forged pistons L2404 - 19cc dish
460 crank kit from P.A.W., balanced, ARP rod bolts, moly rings
Bored .060 over 472ci
D3 heads milled .050
Guides & hardened exhaust seats
PBM brand SS valves installed 2.25 int/1.75 exh
screw in studs & guide plates
3/8 push rods & comp. magnum rockers
ported exhausts & exh bumps removed
Stealth 8012 intake
Milodon 8 qt oil pan
Melling hi-v oil pump
Canton windage tray

C/R is 9.0:1 I know,I know,LOW compression.

The comp cams suggested are:
1. 280H...230/230-.530/.530-LSA 110 degrees
2. XE274H...230/236-.562/.565-LSA 110 degrees
3. X4270H...226/234-.554/.574-LSA 110 degrees
4. 276AH-10...228/236-.547/.547-LSA 110 degrees

This is strictly a street cruiser and will have 3.50 or 3.70 rear gears in a 4,000 lb car.

I would like to get as many opinions about these 4 cams as possible. If you have any other cam suggestions that would fit this combination, feel free to give me that info too.

I really need this help and spring has sprung and I am ready to go.

Thanks Buck

I like #2, if your springs will work. I am not a big block owner so just my $.02.
I like the technology of the Extreme Energy series. Actualy all 4 look good but one will probably work better with your combo. Do you have any stall?

Need help on final cam choice

I have a 460 with 10.5comp in my Lincoln and a friends MK4 has 8,something.We tried a lot and i could always get away with the more rpm oriented stuff without loosing much low end. While he tried a 750carb and rpm intake and
had nearly no low end left!I feel that your combo is somewhat in between,so i vote for no.3
or with the steep gear no.2
I have a 2500 'verter but stock 3:1 gear. Will take something like the no.3 for mine..
Hope that helps
Olli

All four cams seem a bit much for your combination, especially if you will be "crusing".It may sound good at the drive in and it may be a terd for the first 30 mph or so! If you like using Comp's componets,a cam that will work great with your spec is the 4x4 Extreme Energy series, it is the smallest cam listed for the 385 series application in most mail order catalogs.I believe the part number has the 231 number in the center of the grind number (XX-231-X).The specs are somewhere on the order of .505" lift (intake & exhaust)and has the intake duration just short of the 260 and the exhaust duration of the 268.It will provide a slight lope at low idle and will produce a ton of torque and makes good power to around 5500 rpm.I will send more info from the cam card when I arrive at the shop tomorrow...Dave.

Ran an X4272H (extreme 4x4..I can't remember the duration, but the lift was .572/.580) in a 9.8:1 466 in my old truck. 1/8 mile burnouts were a breeze, even with a spool and 2.75 gears. Bottom end was good enough for cruising, and it pulled well through the midrange, up to about 5200 or so, then it signed off. Also ran a Lunati 218-224 .534 lift Hyd. for a while, but it quit pulling around 4500 and the low end was not what it should have been. I'd go with Comp's extreme 4x4 cams.
