But none of the 2 bolts have a round nub.

Do any of these blocks have reliefs in the cylinders for the valves? My 351W block has wear marks in the cylinders from the 351C 2V heads that were on it. I put 2.19 intake 1.71 exhaust valves to feed the 393 a little better and was wondering if they had reliefs in the block. Someone posted a pic that showed reliefs in the block and others do not.

I have to get the heads on it to check the clearance but right now I'm getting the crank machined for wrist-pin clearance.

So do all Cleveland blocks have reliefs for the cantered valves?

The marks that you see are from the exhaust valves rubbing on the cylinder notice there is no carbon built up on the wear marks. All the guides were junk.

It seems funny to me that nowhere have I read anything about relieving the Windsor block for the Cleveland valves. I've been building the 393 for a few years now and I've read a lot stories about the 351Clevor and 302Clevor and not one article mentioned having to relieve the block for the Cleveland valves. I’m going to use the Cleveland head gasket as a guide to relieve the block just need to get the crank to spin all the way around with out hitting something!

Glad to see so much interest in the old Clevelands. You got to love 'em. Yes as far as I know also, all Clevelands had valve reliefs in the cyl. with 2.19 intake and 1.71 exhaust valves you need it. Not sure if you would need it with the slightly smaller 2V version though. Anyone know?
PS I wrote to Edelbrock and they say they are developing aluminum versions of both the 2V and 4V Cleveland cyl. heads. Time will tell. Lets hope so we could all use some nice aluminum 351-C heads. Right boys?

i have a 4 bolt , and the square "nob" at the top and looks like flat or cornered edge at the pan. It should be a '72.
BTW, where are the #'s located? i can't find mine

Aluminium C heads Got the credit card ready and waiting. I'll go without clothes. Well, maybe not. Someone would call the cops.

Interesting side note: In an article published Aug 1972 in Hot Rod called Cleveland Confidential, there is a picture of a block with a head elevated above the left deck. The block has what appears to be a round raised area with a tapped hole in the spot where most of us see the cast square. Wonder what that was all about?

Re: I noticed a few differences in 351c blocks

Hi all,
Greetings from a new member from Australia.

Now here's all the info that relates to our Clevelands.
Some may not be relevant to the US.

Two main blocks. D (early) and square (later). Look at the pair of blocks at the start of the thread and you'll see what I mean.

The d blocks were called that because of the D shape that has been mentioned in this thread. Square blocks obviously have the square on that position.
The xxs and yys are only found on the square blocks (and are supposedly) to break up the oil flow back down on the lifter bores. You'll notice that they are positioned above the bores. Could be pure BS but I've only seen them on square blocks.
All Aussie cast blocks are D2AE-CA which is the same as the boss number which makes that irrelevant to easily distinguishing between the 2.
(There is another lesser known block called a NASCAR block here which has a part number XE192526 or similar, and were not accepted by Ford US due to core shift problems, so we were stuck with them (Which suits us as they're a FN good block. 4 bolt, thicker siamesed walls etc) Ford Australia dumped them into a lot of stock falcons and they turn up every now and again.
My father's 1984 XE Fairmont had one with a 302 crank in the bloody thing.
BTW: In case you didn't know it, we have 302Cs which are basically the same but a 3.00 stroke crank instead of 3.5inch.

Anyway, back to the two blocks, there's a picture of the first 4v clevelands and that D shaped boss is for a temp sender. I'll try and dig the photo up.

Why the square is still there is a mystery to me.

Anyway, I tend to ramble on, so I'll leave it for now.

Hope this helped a bit for you.

Steve (aka xagtly :pronounced "exactly") I own many Fords but my favourite is my XA GT coupe. 351C etc. They look similar to your Mach 1 mustang with Torino and various other US Ford influence. They're the same body shell as the XB coupe which most of you would know from the film MadMax or the Roadwarrior(?) as it was marketed as in the US.
