my new motor

how well do you guys think my new motor will perform as far as hp/tq and ET? i will be firing it in a couple of weeks. 302 with stock crank and rods, arp rod bolts. fully ported D0OE 351w heads by me, 1.84/1.55 valves for this year. KB hyper pistons, 9 3/4:1 static compression. cam is a 234/244 deg dur at .050, 292/302 adv dur, .520"/.544" lift cut on 114 deg LSA. im running a weiand Xcelerator single plane intake with a 750 cfm dp holley. the motor will be spun to around 6800 rpm and im using a tci 3-3500 rpm stall torque converter. anyone want to take a guess or use desk top dyno feel free. thanks

Well the moter combo sounds good, but your ET will not be the best with the 3000 stall and 3.00 gears, put a set of 4.11s in it w/ a 28" tall slick and in good tune should run in the 13.0 to 13.4 range. You should be walking all over WS6 Firebirds and SS Camaro's.

Unless you are running a bunch of nitrous, that cam is gonna hurt you with the wide LSA. I would opt for something closer to 108-110LSA for nat aspirated, no spray. The car will probably go quickest if you shift much lower like about 6000-6200. A 650 carb would probably also net you quicker times with the small cubic inches you have. A set of gears would definitely be a good investment. As Is I would rough guess mid-low 14's.

thanks guys, my next investment will probably be a set of 3.50:1 gears. i would be happy running mid 13s. the cam was a left over i had and it was never used so im trying to make good use of it. i might swap it out this summer if i dont like the performance. what do you guys think as far as hp/tq figures? thanks

Yeah, I would say jumping to 3.5 or 3.73 gears would easily drop you to the mid 13's.

I not sure how heavy the car is, but I think mid to low 14s is a bit slow. The old 306 in my 66 went 14.3 at 100 w/3.80 gears stock stall and on 215/60/15 radials. And the moter was 8 1/2 comp, Torker intake, Carter 625, with Tri-Y headers an 2 chambers, bone stock heads and cam.

Just trying to look on the bright side.

Edit:

Didn't see the last post Rev. Sorry.

The main thing that stands out is the excessively wide lobe seperation. It will kill the low-end power and midrange. A tighter lobe seperation and FREE flowing exhaust to go along with it will move the powerband down a bit to work better with your converter and give the engine some of that missing lower end power your 302 will naturally be lacking. The duration is a bit much for most ported factory heads as well.

Duration figures that large also want to spin 302's higher than where hydraulic lifters are very efficient (around 6k rpm). A shift to a good, modern solid lifter cam with slightly smaller duration specs and a tighter lobe seperation would pick up serious power across the entire rev range.

If you're using street tires, that converter will probably be fine. If you ever step up to a set of slicks... to really take advantage of them, you'll need a looser unit.

The 3.00 rear gear will have to go!

I would probably recommend the Comp 270S Magnum solid lifter cam for your engine. It's a nice grind, that will better match your existing heads and converter. It will produce more usable power, and make the car feel really strong from around 3000-6300 rpm. It's an 'off the shelf' part, and shouldn't put you in the poor house. It will work WAY better with your combo that what you've currently chosen. (real world experience here)

Be SURE to use the correct springs for any aftermarket cam (installed at the correct height), and be SURE to check rocker arm geometry, and adjust pushrod length for proper sweep and roller placement on the valve stem.

Good Luck!

Sounds like a similiar combo to what I'm running.I'm going to switch to a little smaller solid lifter camshaft this summer.I was running 3:1 gears and it was a bit much chugging around town and I have a 4 speed.I changed to a 4.11 detroit locker and it works much better.
