BIG CAMS and timing at idle....POLL

What are you drag guys with big cams running timing wise at idle? 15 deg? 20 Deg? locked out? And how much duration on your cam?

Thinking I might just lock out the advance and run it at 32 deg.

BIG CAMS and timing at idle....POLL

Once I fire up my 347 in the next 2-3 weeks... I have an MSD distributer... I have locked it out... And am going to run about 34-36 degrees... I also am running MSD digital 6, which has a start retard built in though... The cam I am running has 240@.50 int/ 248@.50 exh...

Good Luck, Billy

On my 375W I have the MSD dizzy locked out and set at 34 total. Since I'm using the digital 7 there are lots of options. I have it programed for 0 degree's at start up. 10 degree's at 1200 idle. 2200 its all in. Also have it set up to pull 2 degree's out when its shifted into high gear.
Billy..your going to like the Digital 6.

Ran it locked out around 36* on 557 BBF.

You have to be careful of kick back with no start retard when starting the engine or else you tend to wipe out the bendix on the starter.

If you're running an automatic with a high stall converter, you don't 'need' to lock out the distributer and risk starting problems.

As long as full advance is in by the time the converter takes hold, it should be fine.

However, there's no ignition curve more reliable than one that doesn't move.

Good Luck!

I'm with Mike. For the record, my "little" 302 likes 22 total, all in by 2500. I run a 3000 stall converter. Cam reads 220*/228* @ .050".

38 on the 357, all in by 800 RPM (like it will even run that slow.) They say it doesn't make much difference with a higher-stall converter, but oh what a difference it does make! I was running mine at 14 initial, 38 total all in by 3000 (5000 stall in a 'glide.) Last race day, I took one of the springs off of the dizzy, and made it all in by 800, and instantly started redlighting on the tree. Picked up .08 in the 60', because the engine revs so much quicker off of idle. Had to do a bit of adjusting on the launch, bringing the rpm down to idle (around 1400) to get the reaction times in the .510 range (right where it should be)

20* initial, 21* mechanical for a total of 41* all "in" by 3500 rpm in my 357 cleveland.
Cam is a solid roller 264/272 @ .050. Mine will idle cleanly at 800 rpm if I wanted it to. But I generally set the idle between 1000-1200.
