Oil in my exhaust manifold

Anyone ever get oil in your exhaust manifold? Obviously my ride was smoking like a funny car at the track. Local enforcement wasn't too happy. When I got it home I took off the exh manifold and it was drenched with oil. Is the head cracked or is this a simple gasket problem. The engine is a 360, looks like a 390. Sounds like the valve cover gasket is letting go. Replace the gasket and don't overtighten the bolts that secure it to the head. You may want to see if any other hoses may be leaking on/spraying up onto the manifold. No big deal, just don't go with a cork gasket. The oil will wick past it faster than other materials and also breaks down the fastest. Go to autozone and get a good quality gasket. Pretty much anything but a cork gasket will be fine. Good Luck!

Oil inside the exhaust manifold would be from bad rings or valve guides, or worse a cracked head or block.

Sounds like internal damage, but just in case make sure there is not an abundance of oil coming from the valve cover and being pulled or leaking into the exhaust manifold.

Never know.

I had this problem when the valve seal on my exhaust port came loose. Poorly installed. Guides were AOK after inspection.

Could be similar...

I'm glad you guys helped me out with this one but unfortunately, none of these were the culprit. Fortunately, what turned out to be the culprit was a ten dollar transmission modulator. Apparently, tranny fluid was getting vacuumed directly up to the intake where it was feeding it to the combustion chamber. Just wanted to pass this info along in case it ever happens to anybody else.
