Long Tubes for 5.0s vs. Tri-Ys

I've currently got stock 5.0 shorty headers on my mild 302 in my Falcon which are not very good. They're pinched off looking at the head bolt area. I want to build more bottom end and so am considering biting the bullet and spending $400 (yikes!) on Doug Thorley Tri-Ys. I know they're top quality and will fit my '61 Falcon, but because I've got the Mustang II set up, I have no shock towers and bet I could fit some less expensive bottom-end building 5.0 headers in there as well. Any ideas?
