351C to 460 conversion ... W/ Toploader

Seems I have heard something about the input shaft on a toploader attached to a SB (in my case 351C) is different than the input shaft for a BB (in my case a 460).

I'll be making this engine swap and keeping the Toploader

Could someone please clear this issue up for me

I believe the "snout" on the input shaft is longer on a small block toploader, about 1-1/8" long I think vs 3/4" long on a BB toploader. I would assume then the snout would bottom out in the end of the crank. Solution? Cut the end of the snout back to BB length.

Correct me if I'm wrong fellas!

More than likely I'll be parting it out possibly on ebay ... I'm not 100% sure yet.

I'd like to convert it into the $$$ I need to finish off the 460 build and install

going from a 289-351w/c, to an FE the top loader uses a shorter input shaft, but the 429/460 uses the same input shaft length.

I dealt with toplaoder heaven when i rebuilt mine, he's knowledgable, and no BS, can anyone convine me to not use the toploader instead of a T5 in a smallblock street driven (hiway) 68 cougar?

the small block and the 460 use the same top loader input shaft, the FE's use a shorter one. as for using a top loader over a T5, that would depend on how the small block in you cougar is built, and what rear gear you are pulling. if a 2.80-3.00 gear, or are making 350+hp use the top loader. if pulling a 3.50-4.11 gear and making under 350hp then the T5 is good.
