Big Block Build-up

I am looking for advise and suggestions on a motor I am building for a buddy.

The requirements of the motor are to push a 2400 lbs. 4-Link 9" round tube pro stock frame tempo (yes you read that right) to low 10's.
The motor will be backed by a reverse manual valve body C6 with a 10" 4000 rpm stall converter.
This motor needs to be N/A. I am thinking it is going to take around 600 hp to achieve the goal.

Here is the parts we have currently.

D3VE Heads no port work, I will home port these heads.
D1VE Block bored 30 over, needs to be honed.
2Y Crank, needs to be turned.
D6 truck rods with football bolts.
Edelbrock victor intake w/ dom flange
1050 Dom. Carb
Comp cam solid roller xr292r 254 int 260 ext @ .050" .670 lift.
TRW forged pistons .400" dome L2443NF around 11 to 1 compression.
ARP Studs and Bolt thru-out

Will the rods and crank hold this power to 6500 rpm. The rods will have polish beams and will be shot peened. The crank will be turned, nitided, polish, and profiled. Of coarse the engine will recieve a complete balance job.

Let me know what you think. This is my first big block build. I know small blocks having build around 15 of them ranging from 250 hp 302's to 600 hp 351's N/A.

There's many people on here smarter than me on this, but if i was you i would atleast try to go with a set of DOVE-C heads. By the time you port the d3ve's you probably wont even end up at the size of the dove's. We did the swap on a truck and it really made a big difference.

I ran a #2800 '66 Mustang built the same way. Had a 10" 3500 Fairbanks converter in a C-6 (I use C-4's now). It had untouched D0VE heads, a Port-O-Sonic intake with a Dominator adapter, a set of TRW 2443's with the dome still on, a set of crappy home-made headers, &amp; a .620 lift flat-tappet solid lifter cam. First run was a 10.77 &amp; it was a junk-yard dog. It's easy to get a lighter car with one of these things to haul [img]/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif[/img]

Shoot with a car that light you could almost use a stock big block LOL.

I would ditch the D3VE heads and get some DOVE heads.

The D3VE can be used but it takes a really good porter.


The rods are gonna be iffy at 6500.

Your long block is the same as mine and with those heads as is you will not see 600hp.I'm making right around 400 with a 750 holley.Btw with my slugs .015 below deck it comes up to 10.5 to 1.

Only problem with the 385 forum is if they don't build it, it won't work &amp; they really pe=refer to spend a ton of $$$ on their cars. Also, my stock rods have never given me a problem &amp; I can abuse a lawn mower to no end. I duplicated my old 466 for well under $3K several times. I don't know why you feel that way about the 385 forum. I built my motor for well under 3K and I'm expecting about 500 fwhp. Many of the guys on there are as cheap as I am and many seem pretty open to discussion. But hey to each there own.

Back to the original question.
There is a kick-ass site on how to port DOVE-C heads as well as most ford big block heads. http://www.reincarnation-automotive.com/

According to the flow numbers on that site you can make 700hp with a good port job,2.25 intake and 1.75 exhaust valves on a DOVE-C head.

You really don't need to spin a big block 6500 rpm to make 500-600hp. 6000 is what I will limit my 429 to (and I have a shorter stroke). I am also using a Weiand stealth since I am not going to spin over 6000. If you want to spin that high be my guest there is plenty of hp to be made but you should really get a big cam .700 lift range at least and a lot of duration to take advantage of the high rpm range.

I really am skeptical about stock rods even with ARP hardware, shot peening etc. at that RPM level. It is a gamble, I have heard some that take stock rods to 7500 rpm and then I have seen the resulting disaster of doing so on stock rods, so be warned.

In the last 490 we built (4.5x3.85)we used truck rods with ARP bolts. We floated the pins in the rods (no bushings)by honing slightly. Left the line @6000, shift @6700 or so. 175+runs NO problems.

To put it simply, I was told I had spent so much money &amp; I shouldn't try to help anyone. $7K on a low 9 second car? Was told my experience wasn't worth a crap? Doing 429/460's since 1979? Was also told I couldn't get a stock, non-CJ/SCJ in the 13's (13.0[img]/phpBB/images/smiles/icon_cool.gif[/img], was repeatedly told how poor Blue Thunder heads were but still ran 10.44 at #2800 with a .520 lift cam. Other than Scott &amp; Dave Mclain, I don't think there's anyone over there worth asking. Most just buy parts &amp; have not done much on a dime racing. You're right this IS my opinion, but close to 25 years with big block Fords, &amp; I doubt most guys there all put together have my experience, I believe I might know quite a few tricks they'll never know. BTW for what it's worth mt stock SCJ maked over 430 horsepower at the rear wheels &amp; with slicks, a carb &amp; headers ONLY has run 13.03.

Well I respect you opinion. Has it been a while since you've been there or is this a recent occurence? Anyhow, I like the fact your stock SCJ was making 430 rwhp with a "small" cam.
Was the car a boat (heavy) or what?

My combo is as follows:

429 .030 over
TRW flat tops
DOVE heads, stock valves, worked over pretty well
shold be 11:1 or a tad more
non-CJ stealth
850 dp
2" long tubes
.560 cam solid cam with a decent amount of duration
C6 with transgo kit, R servo, and the good lever (OK I forgot which one)and a 3500 10" stall
roller rockers

This is all going into an 83 mustang with manual brakes, manual rack, no accesories

People tell me I'll be lucky to run 11's

Wouldn't want to clue me in on some of your tricks would ya? LOL (half-kidding!)
