Late model seats in early model mustangs

Has anyone ever swaped late 80's - early 90's Mustang seats in a 65-66 Mustang? I have a pair of front seats out of a '91 Mustang GT and want to put them in my '65 Mustang restomod. Don't know if I should use my old tracks with washers between them and the seats or use the tracks that came with the seats and weld mounting brackets to bottom sliders that will fit my stock holes in my car????? Will the older / smaller tracks support the newer seats with a person with the seat slid all of the way back or in a reclined position? Please help!!!!!!

you use the early seat tracks, and drill a new hole in the seat at the rear. then bolt them in.

That was my first route but as I was test fitting everthing before drilling the seat frame and bending out my seat adjustment lever, I discovered that I need about 4 washers at each bolt between the frame and track to allow for proper movement of all seat adjustment mechanisms. Is this the best way, will it be strong enough????? Buy the way, thanks for the reply!!!

I put 95 leather seats in my 65 that way, but I only had to use a couple washers on each bolt.

I have a grey cloth front seat from an 85 GT in my 65. I had to do a little engineering but it came out fine. Keep in mind the seat was meant to be right on the floor in your early Mustang so the more washers you use the higher the seat will be and then it wont feel good. I had to put the seat in several times to get it the way I wanted I actually ended up with the seat dragging the floor pan, but not enough to keep me from moving it back and forth if I need to.

How thick were the washers that were used? The 4 that I tried put the seat off the track only about 1/4 of an inch. Did you use 2 washers at each bolt or did you have to use less in the back to tilt the seat back? Thanks for all the responses guys, they are a big help!!!!

On the stang were some wierd bent spacers between the seat and the carpet/floorpan in the front. I ended up removeing those and putting a washer or two in the back to get it the way I felt good in it. You will most likely have to do the same, go with the minimum you need to get the seat off the carpet enough to slide it back and forth then go from there, now is the time to taylor the ride hight of the seat to your likeing. It might take a few tries of installing and removeing the seat but worth the extra work.

Late model seats in early model mustangs

Just wanted to give all you who helped me out with your replies a heads up with my seat swap. I installed them yesterday with the old tracks and they tuned out great. The comfort difference is off the charts and man do they look good. I highly recommend a swap such as this to anyone thinking about it. I ended up using 3 flat washers in the front and 2 in the back. I tried just 2 in the front but the track release mechanism on the right side would get stuck and pull the upholstery. I did have to bend down the adjustment lever and change the adjustment rods to different holes but it all came together in the end. The seats do sit a little higher than the stock ones but there is not that big of a difference. I figured since I am not using the stock '91 tracks that I might mess around with them, weld some bolts on them and see if that changes the sitting height at all. I'll keep you all posted on how that turns out and THANKS again to all who helped. Hope this can help others. Next up, upholsery job.
