How is ford rating power?

I know that back in the day, ford gave out bhp numbers and that the 5.0's ratings were net, what are they using now?
Thanks,

It should be net. In 1972-'74 most auto manufacturers switched from gross of base hp to net hp readings. So it should be net hp.

Ford is still using sae net hp ratings, HOWEVER, according to performance figures on the new Cobra, they are seriously under rated: to the tune of at least 25 horsepower...that is, it's making 25 more horsepower than it's rated.

I think after the major screw-up a few years ago when they said the engines were rated higher than were putting out, its okay to be conserative and suprise the consumer. I'd like to be suprised with 25 extra hp than I had expected, wouldn't you?

Correct, after the 99 Cobra debacle SVT has underated all vehicles starting with the 99 lightning and 2000 R. The Mach 1 is even said to be sandbagging a bit as well, RWHP>FWHP conversions are putting it at about 320+hp and 365# tq.

Also, in accordance with State Vehicle Codes, Manufacturers must use S.A.E. Standard J1349 for all advertised HP ratings for vehicles under 6000# and made after 1972.

At the Ford Centennial, I took a group on a tour through the Wixom Assembly Plant-one of the places that we stopped was at the area where they do a final test, including a chassis dyno pull. All of the Lincolns and Thunderbirds are required to pass this final inspection-the ratings listed for these cars are RWHP and torque. Same with the Rouge-all vehicles there go through a final inspection and chassis dyno.

So it would seem to follow that Ford is stating what their dyno results are, based upon their test criteria, for RW ratings. What they might get there would change when the car was delivered to California or Texas.

That makes sense. RWHP is gonna be lower than SAE net.

My neighbor took his 03 Cobra to a chasis dyno. 372 RWHP stock, He added a chip 393 RWHP. Under rated, I 'd say so.

Not by much. The tests to show loss in the drivetrain are only showing about 22HP with a manual trans. That puts the engine around 390-ish HP.
An automatic can suck much more HP -- but the Cobra ain't an auto.

22hp? where do you get that figure? Thats only a 5.6% drivetrain loss, thats EXTREMELY low, i would say impossible for a front engine rear drive car such as the cobra, at least with todays technology. a front wheel drive car has less drivetrain loss but still in the 10% range
