Master Power Power Brake Conversion

This is probably going to be about as ground breaking to some of you as telling you that Ford paints their engines blue, but I'm still amazed and had to say something. I installed the Master Power power brake conversion kit in my car today (after reading the Tech article) and WOW - this is like the greatest thing ever. First, the whole thing was so easy with their kit - it only took about three hours start to finish, except for bleeding the brakes, which I'm going to rant about in a separate post. Everything I needed was there, and there's really pretty much just nothing to it. Opening up the firewall was the only tricky part, and that was made easy with a Sawzall and a Dremel.

But, I had absolutely no idea how much stronger my brakes were going to be. I'm completely blown away by it - I had planned to do a 4 corner disc conversion this winter, but now I'm wondering if it's even worth it. This car brakes like a brand new car. Absolutely amazing! You think thats great, you should try that new sliced bread?

About the bleeding issues, I've been wanting to get the one man bleeder screws but for $12 a wheel "at O'reillys" I think I do it the old fashoned way.

Anybody know were I could get them bleeders cheaper?

I think the tech article addresses that - check it out. I believe there is a different booster for that application.

I also put the Master Power Brake kit on my 67 Stang. They make a big difference.

About the Master Power Brakes conversion (also available from Stainless Steel Brakes and others):

The people pursuing the junk-yard brake conversions really don't know what they're missing. No way I'd ever do that when the kit's are so much easier and cheaper once you factor in your time.

My conversion started squeeling / groaning once the brake pads get up to temperature after about 4000 miles of service. They still work great and have zero signs of wear, but the squeel and groan noise is pretty annoying. Is this just a glazed pad / rotor condition that can be fixed, or is this the nature of semi-metallic pads?

69convert,

Is the kit you installed just the booster and master cylinder, or is it a full disc brake kit?

What did you have before the upgrade?

I really need to lose the 4 wheel manual drums in my '68.

Thanks for the info.

JC, the kit basically just includes a 9 inch booster and master cylinder combo, and a new pedal with a longer fulcrum.

To accomodate the booster, you have to open up the firewall slightly to make room, but that's really an easy task. The toughest thing about this installation is just reconnecting the brake lines because there's so little room to work with. Also, be sure to buy a set of various fittings, about 2 feet of brake line, a bending tool, and a flaring tool so you can run the new lines when you're done. A small investment there will make the whole thing much easier. Again, it's really an easy thing to do.

For a car with an automatic, putting in the new pedal was about as tricky as changing a light bulb! (I guess it's a little trickier with a clutch . . .)

My plan was to go to disc brakes, but my initial experience with the drum and the 9" booster is that I just don't see myself needing them now. I probably eventually still will just to say I did, but I'm very comfortable with the braking performance of the car.

I have a MPB kit for my '64 Falcon. Unfortunately I can't use it with the 4W disc setup I have unless I cut 2 1/2 inches into the spring tower(wich I won't do). On TFFN there is a conversion using a Geo Metro setup that will clear.
