New guy needs some cam advice

I just joined up to F/M, and have found it to be very useful so far. I am currently refreshing the 302 in my 79 Monarch (thats right, a monarch...stop laughing..)what i need is some input on cams...here are the specs in the motor thus far:
79 302 w/ 66 289 heads (mild porting job)
wieand Stealth intake
Demon 650 carb
MSD billet distributor
stock cam
stock bottom end

I was thinking of going with a Summit Racing Cam with intake duration of 234 degrees...is this too big? I also have a built C-4 that will get a 2500 stall converter.
Any advice you guys have would be appreciated...

That Mercury Granada(sorry, had to do it) is a fairly heavy car and the cam you picked would work well if you had some 3.70-4.11 gears and a 2800-3000 stall converter. I know you have decent 9.5:1 or more compression and maybe with the 2500 stall and some Rhoads lifters and some 10w30 oil to help them bleed off quicker and the mentioned rear gear ratios it should move out prety good. If you didn't have that much compression, that cam would be too big but you can use it in this case.

mid/low 14s should be easy with that combo and could possibly run a high 13.

Thanks for the help...I really appreciate it. I do transmission work for a living, but this is my first time building a motor, so I am sure I will have plenty of dumb questions. By the way the car does have a 3.90 rear,so it sounds like this is the cam I want. Most all the guys where I work have cars they tinker with ( I am the ONLY Ford guy there), and mine is the butt of a lot of jokes, so a mid 14 timeslip we be the perfect way to shut them up...

Thanks for the help!

Personally, I'd go with a small solid lifter unit. Those heads are going to be good for around 6000 rpm max. I'd go with a cam that will match. The Comp Cams 270S Magnum is a small solid that would fit the bill perfectly. It measures 224 @ 0.050" with a 110 lobe seperation, and gives 0.499" lift.

I don't care for hydraulics in hotrods, plus, I believe you've picked a cam that is a little large for that engine. It won't really start to turn on hard until around 4k rpm. This one will come on hard much earlier in the rev range, and still pull hard to 6k.

Good Luck!

If you dont want to step to a roller cam or to solid lifters, I recommend Comp Cams 274 Extreme Energy hydraulic flat tappet. Has a noticeable idle but behaves well in the lower revs.Revs like crazy to 6000 rpm.
