289 vs 302 RODS

what's the difference in length between standard 289 vs 302 connecting rods (center of big end to center of the little end)
can i put 302 rods in my 289 to get more compression?

thanks

302 rods measure 5.090", 289 rods are longer at 5.115". Putting 302 rods in your 289 will put the pistons down in the hole, reduce compression, and reduce your rod/stroke ratio. As a general rule, you want to use the longest rods possible.

289 rods are 5.155, not 5.115.

standard 302 rod-5.090"
Boss 302 rod-5.155"
standard 289 rod-5.155

that being said, you could use 289 rods in a 302, use 4v cleveland heads (modified for use on a windsor block) and have a boss 302, for the most part. It still wouldn't have the 4-bolt mains and beefier main caps...but for cheapskates like me, it's the closest we'll ever get to owning a true boss 302. Good luck

What stroke crank are you using? What type of pistons are you using? Also, what is the wrist pin height?

'Er, using the longer rods will NOT move the piston down in the bore, quite the reverse. Piston will come .050/.060 out of the block. Not a big problem, just chuck the pistons in a lathe and face off the required amount. It's an easy way to 1)reduce piston weight. 2)get "zero deck" which is cheaper than decking the block. CAUTION!!! re-check valve to piston clearance. I've done 3 of these, they all run great.
