66 stang

just today i stopped to look at a classic mustang. i saw that it was a '66 w/ a 302 backed by a 4speed manual tranny. it is unrestored and all stock except new rims and tires and needs a new ball bearing in the steering column, which would be under $100 to fix. he wants $3900 for it. my first question is: i thought only 289s and 390s came in the 65-66s and he said it was all stock. am i misinformed and there is a 302 in it or is he lying? my second qustion: is this a good deal?

The only V8 in 66 was a 289. The 302 wasn't offered until 67. Check the vin and see what the car was originally equipped with. If it runs good and isn't too rusty its pretty good deal....i'd bring up the fact that the 302 isnt original and see if you can get the price down.

Actually the 302 wasn't available in the stangs until half way through 1968.Its definetly not original but a 302 is easily bolted in place of a 289 and if the car is in good shape it sounds like a good deal to me.

the guy told me that the engine is a 302 because he bought it from another guy. it has a 500cfm 2barrel carb, new dist. cap, spark plug wires, and im assuming new plugs. also, im not sure if it was the ignition or not but it was orange box, bout 6"x4", mounted on the inner wheel well. also, the top of the shocks were orange, not sure if they are new or just that part was painted. the car sounded mechanically well, a nice deep tone but i dont know if it has new mufflers or the old ones are rusting out. didnt get a chance 2 go under the car cuz i was wearing nice clothes that i didnt wanna get dirty. the car is very solid. he said it wasnt been driven in a while and when he was taking us for a ride he had trouble getting it into 1st for the 1st time, but he said it was because it hasnt been driven in a while. i would appreciate any feedback about what i can expect from this car and if i should jump on the deal. thanks.
