Port Volume (Home Ported D0OE)

are you talking about a d00e 351w head?? if so the stock intake port cc is 142 same as a gt-40 head. all 289,302 and the later 351 all have 124cc intake ports. i have a set of dooe 351w heads with only clean up on the ports, bigger valves and bowl work the heads flow 200/174. the heads was good for mid 11's

The intakes actually cc'd out to 160cc. The exhausts are unknown...I never measured the volume. Exhaust volume has much less of an effect on engine characteristics than intake volume. Main thing is exhaust flow.

The exhaust port measures 1.48 x 1.25 and it was 1.24 x 1.0 stock. If you make your exhausts this large, you'll need to be more selective when you buy headers because some do not have the inlet port large enough to match the exhaust ports. Thorley tri-ys were too small, but Dougs tri-ys worked perfectly. Hooker Super Comps would probably work too if you don't mind low ground clearance. Ford Powertrain Applications would be another good choice.

I always thought that D0OE heads 351 or 302 had the same port design. I was under the impression that the valve size was the only difference. Well... by the intake port volumes you guys are posting, I now know they are not even close to the same.

I've been working on a set of 302 heads.

Now I have a decision to make:
-Stick with the 302 heads I've started on (why?)
-Use a set of 1968 289 heads I have (any better?)
-Find a set of D0OE-351 heads (obviously better)
-Find a set of GT40-P heads (plug & header clearance?)

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Do the '68 289 heads have any advantages over the D0OE-302 heads?

The C9OE and D0OE 351W heads are identical castings with identical sized combustion chambers. The C9 head came on the 351W 4bbl engine (which had a higher compression due to it's pistons) and the heads got mislabelled as 'high compression' by some.

However, the C9 and D0 351W castings are not 'gods gift to Ford owners'. They are just the best in the big ole pile of turds (also known as head castings) offered by Ford. They don't flow enough to support a warmed over 302, let alone a 351W. This is the reason why 99% of small block Fords were 'easy pickins' for the chevy crowd. Our heads sucked!

These heads were bad on a 302... so they had no hope of supplying a hotrod 351W. It's why (before aftermarket heads came out) the 351W was considered a 'boat anchor'. If you wanted to do any racing with a 351ci Ford engine, it was a 351C.

If you want to go fast with a SBF, go purchase a set of aftermarket heads. You'll be WAY ahead in the long run.

I did mine back before the aftermarket came to our rescue. They are WAY THIN in many areas, and even cracked once, causing the engine to hydraulic. (killing a rod and piston) When I was about halfway done, Alan Root came out with his 'AR' head ($1600 a pair for bare castings) which later became the now discontinued Motorsport J302 unit... but those were too rich for me. After buying all quality hardware and paying for the machine work, I still ended up with around $1000 in my heads...... and I did all the port work!

I had them flowed (after several years of abuse, and on a well worn valve job) and they managed 218 cfm on the intake and 176 on the exhaust... and powered my 3300lb 4-speed car to a 7.48 in the 1/8 (no bottle) and a 6.74 with the nitrous. On the rare occasion the car was taken to the 1/4 mile, it would pull off 11's no bottle, 10's on it. The engine worked just fine with full timing on pump gas, but got race fuel when the bottle was turned on.

It's WAY easier to go fast with aftermarket heads, but it is nice to be able to claim 10's with a 302 powered pump gas 289 headed street machine.

Oh, my next engine WILL have aftermarket heads.

Good Luck!
