another electric fan ?

i'm thinking about getting an electric fan, or asking for one for christmas. in another recent post, n20mike suggested a derale fan for 65-66 mustangs. it has a full shroud and fits perfectly but only flows 1900 cfm. i'm wondering if its better to go with a fan with a full shroud that flows only 1900 cfm or a 16" spal, or similar, with no shroud that flows 2300+ cfm? this is for a '66 mustang, approx. 300 horse 289, stock radiator with a flowkooler water pump. any help is appreciated

The 1900cfm can be misleading... I don't think there's a 'standard' for listing cfm ratings. This fan has a super powerful 265W motor that is rated to pull a continuous 23.4 amps. (which is quite a bit of power) I tested it on my battery charger, and it showed a continuous 21 amps. It definitely blows a LOT harder than the old 16" fan that was on the car... even though it was rated close to the same cfm.

My old fan worked just fine until the temperature reached 90+, and I was just using Moroso belt drive for the water pump... (along with a griffin 2-core aluminum, stock sized but thicker radiator) The Derale should have no problem cooling pretty much any 65-66 mustang using an adequate radiator.

The Derale #16926 also has a built in shround that fits the radiator perfectly. Mount the unit with some weather stripping, and ALL the air the fan moves, will be coming through the entire radiator core.

There's a company (HotRod Air) that sells aftermarket air conditioning for early cars. They sell this fan (under their name) as a high power unit to be used with their AC systems for max efficiency.

I have seen this unit rated elsewhere at 2300-2400 cfm. It looks like an OEM unit, and has a top quality feel. I think it's under-rated in comparison with some of the other fans out there. It's definitely the best I've found that will fit a 65-66 mustang. (most are physically too large or thick to fit)

Good Luck!

Well....I love my 16'' Spal fan.
I used it on my 408 cleveland stroked with a 4 core brass radiator and it kept in it in the middle of normal operating temp. I now use it with a griffen aluminum radiator and it keeps me barely on the temp chart. I also know the super duper 16 spal fan comes as a slim fit making it possible to strap it to a stock radiator on a stock 289 without any water pump interference issues.

I got mine from Bill Gear over at www.streetortrack.com

ive got the Derale 16818 on the ranchero with a hokey homade fan shroud to cover more of the radiator and cooling capacity has never been an issue, heck, even with the extra shroud that i made the thing creates so much wind that it wasnt an issue, i just got bored and made the shroud.

what are all of you running electric fans using for alternators?I have a 1987 lincoln mark 7 100 amp on my mustang.I used the same fan off the mark 7 and the fan has ate 3 alternators.

It just seemed as though that fan sucked the alternator dry.But according to the article on this site the fan i was using draws 40 amps.

Also since im already asking i didnt use any relays or anything i just wired into the ignition to turn the fan on when the engine started. These alternators were all brand new along with the wiring and the external regulator.Im a bit stumped as to why this fan would work on the lincoln but not on my mustang? When electric motors are going bad or alredy bad do they tend to do this?Or do i need a 130 amp upgrade over the 100?I would like to make it all work with what ive got instead of 200 more dollars for the 130 amp.

Sorry so long of a post.

2 items to note......

1. you should wire it using a relay and install a thermostat switch to cycle the fan on and off as it is needed, most likely the fact that it is ALWAYS running is prob what is killing your alt.

2. I have a small 65 amp alt in my FB....I off course also have very little accesories right no (not even a radio) so the only things that draw current are the fan the and lights.

So is the 100 amp sufficient enough for an electric fan?I also have a killer audio/video system that when ran with out the electric fan gets enough power to operate and the battery is still able to stay charged but as soon as the fan comes on the battery gauge goes to the red and doesnt move but maybe a centimeter or two when you rev it up.

But as i said as soon as you turn the fan off it jumps right up to the regular spot.

I can't believe your having those problems. I'm running the HotRod Air system (derale) with a 65A alternator and haven't had any charging problems at all. Also run Halogen lights and decent 100W sound system. Maybe there is a short in the fan motor, weak battery, weak ground, or faulty wiring causing elect. resistance somewhere. Have you tried a larger battery, bigger cables, check all cable and wire conections, etc. My fan runs through a thermostat and relay system with 10guage wire and 30A fuse that connects directly to the battery post on the solenoid.

Upgrading to an electric fan myself for my 65. Don't get the Black Magic universal mount. Great fan but it's too wide to fit. Found out the hard way.
