302 Block Questions

Do 302 blocks have the provision for the clutch arm pivot to screw into?
Can I bolt the 260 style front cover on it?
Any help and /or feedback is appreciated.
Thanx, Mike

302 Block Questions

untill 1974 clutch pivot holes were used. even some later blocks had them. you canuse the 260 front cover, but you will need to use the 260 water pump as well as they are different. the 260 water pump is getting hard to find though.

302 Block Questions

The later 'one piece rear main seal' blocks were not tapped for the clutch pivot ball.

The 260 timing cover (which uses the early aluminum water pump) can be bolted to the later block. I've seen the later cast iron pumps used with these covers, but for best results and fit, use the old aluminum one.

Good Luck!

302 Block Questions

Thanx for the feedback.
The original 260 that came outta the Ranchero was replaced by a used 289 that failed ( stripped cam gear ). Now I figure, what the hell, might as well go one bigger!!
Any other things I should be aware of that you know of?

302 Block Questions

Just be aware that the later (82-later) blocks have a 50oz crank balance, and will require their own (or special swap) flywheels and harmonic balancers.

I'd shoot for a 289 or pre-81 302 unit.

Good Luck!

302 Block Questions

They are Weld Pro-Stars. The tires are 165/15 (old style VW Bug) radials.

The wheels are 15"x3.5" but I'd probably go with a slightly wider wheel if I had it to do over again. I have to keep the VW bug tires pumped up to around 50psi to keep them from looking underinflated. I KEEP them at that pressure, and have never had a problem.

A 15x4 or 5" wheel would allow the use of a 185 or 195/75/15, which would have a better load capacity.

Good Luck!
