385 Series ... water pump install
The question is this.
Is there a metal plate that goes between the water pump and the timing cover ... or am I just "up in the night again"?
I could have sworn there was a plate I installled on the effie 460 ...
I just snagged me a near perfect timing cover from the JunkYard for my "Mach1 460 Project" and this water pump had no plate in there.
I the first answer is "yes, there should be a plate", then the second question is ...
How important is it that it be there?
Any help appreciated

OK ...
That sounds exactly as I thought ... That sucker can't pump water efficiently if the clearance behind the impeller is about 3/4".
Is there anyplace a person can buy one of these ....
Or ...
Have I just discovered a "Gold Mine" if I can figure out how to fabricate them myself
I never recall hearing any discussion about this plate at all ... and as I recall ... I was not impressed with the condition of the one on my Effie motor.

Take a good look at the timing cover too, if there's a big hole inside that doesn't belong there, I can tell you a cheap fix.

The only hole is the one where the cavity above the water passage on the driver side has the aluminum gone. Looking at the block this only leads to a "dead end" at the block.
Doesn't appear to be any sort of problem with regard to coolant flow ... also can't imagine Ford would make that aluminum "paper thin" if it were a problem.
I can't see anything else ... got any hints for me???

Thanks Bad 88 GT
Chilly 460 found a couple of listing for plates ... I'll watch those and get myself under control

The plate is still available from Ford, hafta look up the part number. If you don't get the right timimg cover gasket, fix the hole, or goop up the wrong gasket, you're in for a leak eventually. I tool sillycone & completely filled in the hole & trimmed it with a long sharp blade, I used a Wolf knife. Anyone that's been into one & looked at the reliefs in the timing cover knows what I'm saying.
