66 Coupe GT

Im getting my grandmothers 66 mustsang coupe GT this week. It is a "K" code engine, but it has been "de-tuned" so to speak. She took it to a mechanic and had them make it so it would run regular unleaded gasoline. The thing used to really have some punch and now its a dog. Any tips on where to get started putting the engine back to stock?

Just a guess but maybe they just tweaked the timing? Or do you think they did something with the heads?

I believe they did something to the heads if not more. The thing used to have some killer excelleration, and now it has hardly anything. From the "K" code it had the 271 horse engine, but there is nothing close to that now. Im guessing that they even might have lowered the compression. I would like to put her back to stock specs and do a little more, like port and polish the heads..ect...
Shes got 92K original miles on it, so still in good shape

You can take of the a valve cover and see if it still has HP heads. They have cast in pockets for the valve springs and screw in studs.

Maybe they put later low compression heads on it. Just a thought.

Another thing that use to be done to them is put 2 sets of head gaskets on them. I even read that in a Ford Service manual several years ago for cars going to countries with less than the required octane gas available.
