289 build info.

I am getting read to build a 289 for my dailey driver. Ranchero,toploader,3.00 rear. The short block will be bored.decked, balanced, recon rodsw/arp bolts, hyper. pistons, around 9.5 comp ratio. Not sure what cam would be best?Heads are 69 351.I plan to grind out the air bosses and match the exhaust ports to my header gaskets.and blend the bowl areas under the seats. The intake is a performer RPM with a 570 holley vac. secondary carb. Headers will be Tri-Y 's.Does this sound like a good solid combo or do I need to do more/less head work?Looking for any and all opinions.I am/was a chevy guy don't know to much about SBF's.

Here's what I'd say if "it were mine", and I was using the term "daily driver":

Carb might be a bit on the small side, but everything else sounded good (or at least didn't sound wrong). 600 or 650 is where I'd look for the carb. The Performer RPM might be a bit short on low-end torque for a daily driver. I'd look at the straight Performer if you don't already have the RPM.

For cam (again what I'd do) is convert to a roller with the parts available from Ford Racing (any just about anybody else).

M-6500-S58 early block hydraulic roller lifter set
M-6250-E303 282/282 .498/.498
I'd also get the Competition Cams Pro-Magnum roller rockers. Not really necessary, but would be on my list.

Should be well over 300 H.P. with this. Daily driver is a relative term...

I'd go with a weiand stealth, they have better low end than the rpm's

I was wondering if one of the factory roller cams would work well in a carburated application. What is involved in converting my 65 block to a factory roller setup??Do you know if the pro magnum roller rockers will fit under the Scott Drake repop Cobra style valve covers?

for a cam to go with your performer rpm intake, use the edelbrock performer rpm cam, or the ex268h extreme energy cam from comp cams. both will work great with your settup. as for the carb, the 570 is perfect. go with the tri-y headers they work great on a small block ford, especially if you use an X pipe int he exhaust system.

For a daily driver with stock gears, the carb is perfect and a performer or rpm or stealth is fine. The performer will give more bottom end. A roller cam conversion will run you at least 600.00+ it would be cheaper to get a roller block and start there, I have done the conversion on my 351w, I would'nt go back to flat tappet but it is expensive. If your not going to race much I would run a comp 260 cam or at most the erson tq-20, the 260 will give great power up to 5000 rpm so actually the performer would work better and the mileage will be great. Another option you may look at is holley TBI, I actually have one for sale 300.00 and it blows a carb away it bolts on to any 4bll intake, you can adjust it from the drivers seat(choke, accel pump, idle, mid, power) all by twisting little knobs and also you can switch on the 02 sensor and it adjusts itself. Over a carb it usually adds about 25hp 25-40 ft lbs of torque and 2-5 mpgs, theres lots of older analog holley systems out there and on mild engines they work KILLER after driving with a projection you would never even want to run a carb again. Just my 2 cents
