FlowMasters - Series 40 or Series 50?

I want to order the new mufflers for my 03 Mustang GT. The Series 40s I guess are like the American Thunder 2-chamber, and the Series 50s are like the Force II 3-chamber.

I think the Series 40s will be too loud (and annoying in the car), but I don't want to get the Series 50s and be disappointed that it's still too quiet.

I have the Force II set-up in my 89 Mustang and it sounds great, but that car doesn't have the 4 cats anymore.

Anybody do this already? or any opinions?

Thanks!

40 series are 2 chamber and are louder with the 2 grand drone.50 series are 3 chamber and are quieter but not by much.

FlowMasters - Series 40 or Series 50?

I had a pair of 3 1/2" 50's on my bracket car a while back. On a 500 HP 351w, they're quiet as you'd want a race car to ever be. I swapped them for some Schoenfield 4" long "mufflers" to free up some space, picked up .4 in the 1/8. I then put the 50's on my street-drive mustang and they're louder than hell on a fairly stock 302. I added an X-pipe, and it quieted down considerably, but they're still too loud for my taste.

So, I guess I'll want the 50s... I don't want that annoying drone inside the car. And on their website, they claim the 50s are much quieter in the car and still sound good outside the car.

Thanks for the help.

My favorite exhaust note was years ago from the really cheapie "chery bomb" glass-packs and side exhaust from a 300 hp 289. Sounded very similar to the GT500E (Eleanor) car long before that movie was (re)made.

I'm really tired of the Flowmasters on my '67 now, and hope someday to return to a more blistering / buzzing high performance sound instead of the rumbling 'blattttt' coming from these Flowmasters.

I think Spintech or Borla mufflers will be on there next. Something that doesn't sound like the engine is pretending to be something it isn't.

I have 400 hp 302 with Hooker Super Comp headers 2 1/2" x-pipe and flowmaster 40 series. The sound is LOUD, maybe to loud for cruising, both inside and outside the car. But putting the pedal to the floor really puts a smile on my face.

I have the 50s in mine - they're definitely not quiet by any stretch. Actually, most of the time I wish they were quieter. They only thing I'd warn against is that they're so bulky and long that it was a challenge to route the exhaust -

Well....I went to my exhaust shop to put 3 chamber 50 series on, and left with 2 chamber 40 series.

Here how the conversation after I pulled up my 65 FB with open headers on a 408 cube stroker 351c

"I would like to get some 3 in pipes, a custom x, 3 inch in and out 50 series stepped down to 2.5 and then bent over the axle and out the valance"

"uhhhh, no way"

"what do you mean no way?"

"2 reasons son, first the 50 series is not performance oriented, you want a 40 series simply becuase of the flow. Second, you have that car lowered a little, I can tell...the 50s series are a lot longer. Those 40s will tuck up real nice in that space between the rear and the floor."

"But won't they be loud?"

"laugh"

"what?"

"40s 50s...they are all loud. Sure the 50 is a little quieter, but what you give up in sound by going with the 40s you will pick up in power and better fit when you fly over a speed bump and didn't see and your pipes stay on the car. Plus with me building you an x and using those big 3 inch pipes.....you're gonna love it"

"ok"

I've never looked back. Loud yes. Annoying? only if you get tired of the sound of raw power.

I thought the Delta Flow series 50s were actually supposed to Flow the same as the old 40s?
