Lexan Windows

I have an opportunity to purchase lexan windows for my '66 Comet for a good price. Before I commit to the deal, I wanted to run the idea by y'all. On one hand, the car is going to used for drag racing. Therefore, a little weight saving can't hurt. On the other hand, I question whether the effort involved in changing the front windshield and side windows over will be worth it in a mild drag race car. Plus, with the addition of a iron-headed 460 motor and a ten-point roll cage, the Comet isn't going to be light no matter what I a do.

Figure it this way, assuming the intake manifold you are using is aluminum, if you could have gotten the same performance out of a cast iron aftermarket intake you would say "no way, im getting the aluminum intake, its lighter". On my '73 ranchero I saved 13 lbs. by making a lexan plastic rear window for it, Glass is heavy stuff, so long as safety is not an issue I say DO IT ! personally i would keep the glass windshield cause you can clean them forever and they will not scratch.

I also favor any mod that will lighten a ride. 1 weight reducing mod may not be that efective, mut many will be. Lighter = faster.

Unless you get the really expensive stuff, you'll have to replace it on a regular basis, since it scratches so easily.

If it's a 100% race car that will never be put back on the street, you can gut all the side window mechanism out and install the lexan in place in the permanantly UP position.

Personally, I think it's too much of a PITA to fool with for most cars.

Good Luck!

Sidewindows? Sure and take the crank stuff out but make a strap for the driver's window so you can lower it sometimes. Windshield? No way.

Actually, after one summer in the staging lanes I'm seriously comtemplating getting some bolt on electric window winders for the passenger side doors. Screw weight - when the lanes are at 120+F I want AIR!
