GT40 Heads On A 289?

Are GT40 or GT40P heads a bolt on for my '65 289 A-code motor? The plan is to use the original cast iron intake & Autolite carb. Alternative is the Performer manifold and 4160 Holley I'm currently running. My concerns are for intake match and valve interference. Thanks!

they are a bolt on deal, and an excellent budget head for the 289. i would recomend useing a performer rpm intake with a 500-600cfm carb. the edelbrock is a good one to use, as is the road demon jr.

You'll have a hell of a time finding exhaust manifolds (or headers) to fit the P heads from what I read. To me, the P heads are not worth the hassle. The plan GT-40's should take the stock stuff.

I think the gt40 heads use the windsor size head bolts. The gt40p is a bolt on but headers are a problem.

GT40 Heads On A 289?

Frodo,

I'm running GT-40P heads on a 302 roller in a 67 Fairlane with a Weiand stealth and a Holley 650 Vac. Sec. I have
Tri-Y headers fron Central Coast Mustang with no clearance issues whatsoever. They're nickel plated and actually they are made to fit early mustangs.

The heads are right out of the box and I can spin it to 6200 with no problem. They make great power with excellent torque across the board. The best part is they are good heads for the $$.

The header clearance issue is due to the location/angle of the spark plugs. If the Tri Y headers fit then go for it. Will these heads require a kit to allow for an adjustable rocker arm assembly? I believe the rockers on the late model heads just torque down while the 289 heads would have an adjustable set up either as a rail or non-rail type to get proper lifter preload. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

If you're not a header kind of guy, the repro 289 HIPO manifolds bolt up to the GT40P heads with plenty of spark plug room.
