67 289 exhaust

I just purchased a 67 mustang with a 289 engine bored out to a 302. It has the stock headers and glass packs. I am wondering if there is a good kit our there with dual exhaust for around 400.00 and if I should get new headers while I am at it or will the stock headers provide pretty similar performance since it is still a small V8.

with tri-y headers and a good dual exhaust system you should pick up about 20hp. enough to feel when you stand on the gas. the headers run about $150 depending on where you get them, and you can get the local midas shop to set you up with custom duals for about $300 for 2 1/4" pipe and a good pair of turbo mufflers.

Just an FYI - if the seller said it was "bored out to a 302" then you might want to be suspect of anything else they said. You can't "bore out" a 289 to a 302. You CAN use a 302 crank and rods to make a 289 a 302. A 289 is a 4" bore x 2.87 stroke and a 302 is a 4" bore x 3" stroke.

If it's a stock 2bbl engine with the 2bbl carb, headers won't do much but lean it out. Coupled with a stock or aftermarket 4bbl and a 500 Edelbrock or Carter carb will add some good torque and power. Summit Racing has many different less costly headers and also sells a "header back" dual system , 2 1/4" that "fits most 1964-1973 Ford V8 Mustang" for $129.95. # SUM-680110 Headman headera runa about $120, Flowtech $90, Hooker #6901 $150, Doug Thorley Tri-y's $330. Use a real set of metal sandwich gaskets like FelPro or some copper seal items and not the cheesy crap they ship in the header box.
