65 Mustang Clutch Pedal....HELP

Just finished installing a 5 speed in the stang...was a auto.I installed the heavy spring under the dash that goes to the clutch pedal. The rest of the adjustments(upper and lower in the engine compartment) should not affect this question.Well now if you push the clutch pedal towards the floor all is normal until the last 2 inchs. At this point if you push past the last 2 inchs of travel the pedal now stays down to the floor...so centerline is 2 inchs from the floor,WHAT IS GOING ON HERE???

DO you guys run this spring with a diaphragm clutch set up ???

65 Mustang Clutch Pedal....HELP

That spring gives assistance in holding the clutch pedal on the floor. If the clutch spring isn't that strong, that assistance spring may not be needed.

A trick in removing it, is to take off the clutch pedal 'stop' that keeps if from coming back too far. This will allow the pedal to release a lot further, and the spring will simply fall right off!

I installed/removed the spring without doing this little trick many years ago, and really laughed at myself once I discovered how easy it was!

Take the spring off and see if you like how it feels.

Of course, this might be off base. If you have a diaphragm pressure plate, it could be getting pushed in too far and sticking.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply. This happens even with NO clutch rod installed.I'm going to try it with removing the spring. It is just something I'm tring to understand. The only thing I can think of is like what you said: spring might be too short.I'll give removing it a try.

Without a clutch rod, its strictly the linkage movement. Sounds like a bad bind in the linkage somewhere.

I did not say the spring was too short.

That big spring hooked to the clutch pedal under the dash helps hold the clutch pedal down when you push it to the floor. Of course it is going to stay down when push it to the floor without the clutch hooked up.

As you push the clutch pedal down (without the clutch hooked up) the spring will hold it to the floor.

Good Luck!

yes! Mike is right, without the clutch actually installed the pedal will not come back after it is pressed down that far... until you pull it by hand... and be CAREFUL!!!! It has enough force to take your head off... do not even ask me how I found that out!

Yep, that spring is set up on a pivot that will hold the pedal UP and well as DOWN.

I can picture you laying upside down under the dash, and getting bonked in the head with the clutch pedal. I've done stuff like that too. I use to laugh at my dad when he did stuff like that.... Then I would run like hell because he usually failed to see the humor in it!

Good Luck!

THATS exactly what happened... was installing my brake light switch and decided I needed more room and lifted the pedal up just enought o have it spring back... needless to say I was pissed off... when I woke up.
Not to highjack the thread, but N02Mike.. I took your advice and went with the Edelbrock nitrous kit... arrives tomorrow. Will let you know how installation goes!

I went through the same exact thing. I used the Ron Morris clutch conversion kit for my T5, and didn't need the spring. I'll tell ya though, its one stiff pedal. LOL.
