Don't do it! Low gear is too low, torque rating is too low. Transmission is too weak.
Check into the swap a little closer and you will find it is widely advised that under no circumstances is this a recommended swap. Check below...engine, torque rating, 1st gear ratio. Even in the early years, the 302 (5.0 liter V- the torque rating was 300 ft/lb and they needed improvement, the 4-cyl (2.3 liter)transmission is only rated at 240 ft/lb capacity.

My buddy upthere is right, you should not put a 4 cyl t-5 with a V8. However, the hardware youŽll need is the same. Basically youŽll need a 5.0 bellhousing, preassure plate, flywheel, disk, throw out bearing, and clutch fork.

I plan on changing the tranny next year and the engine when i get it running. I don't plan on dumping the clutch in the first 10 minutes of it being done.

HI
It don't matter if you dump the clutch 10mins. or 10yrs later the 4cyl. tranny won't last on a v8. Even if you never dump the clutch the tranny won't last on V8 power.

Playin Devils advocate, I have heard of the 4 banger trannys being used with good sucess(no way I would try it though). Neighbor down the street has one in a '96 V6 Stang, his kid has been driving it for 8-9 months, so far no prob. BTW you'll need a late '80s pilot bearing for a Probe to make it work.

yes the 4 cylinder tranny will work on the V6, and the early inline sixes, even hopped up, BUT it will not last behind a V8. there is way too much torque available at the flywheel with the V8, and the 4 cylinder tranny will break. heck even the V8 trannies break behind hopped up V8's. do oyu really thing the 4 popper tranny will last?

Well, IMHO I do not think itŽs the best of swaps, but when confronted with not having my stang runing because a sincro was bad, I put a 4 cyl turbo T-5 on it and never thought twice about it. I used it and abused it with my stock 302 for 2 years until I found a 8 cyl T-5, and never had a problem....and for me the low gears were a plus off the line. I still do not think you should do it if you got the choise, but if not, just stay stock and donŽt use slicks.

This to me is along the same lines as using the 7.5 rear end with a modified V8.Some say NO WAY IN HELL and others have had good luck.
I know a few guys using the 2.3 T-5 from the T-Bird Turbo coupes and so far its been ok.
Its up to you man.But i agree with tyhe last comment of not using slicks.
If i were you and had to do this it would be a go between tranny just as tranny i used to get me up and running.

The T-5 from my old SVO is in a mid 12 second GT right now & has been for a year. Albeit a World Class T-5 he had a 4 popper one in there for a year.
