99 Explorer engine (302) with GT40P heads

I'm an old school guy (289 in 65 mustang), and I'm just looking into the new 5.0 engine (roller cam) stuff recently. Can anyone give me a little feedback about a '99 Explorer 5.0, and tell me if it's my answer.
Are these all roller cam motors, and will they accept a larger cam with the stock roller lifters?
Would these GT40P heads be any better than my 351W heads (64CC) or am I about the same? I'd really like to replace my old school engine with the new roller technology, and I can get a good price on this '99, so I'm curious if this is my answer. Are there any known issues with this motor (typically) I just plan on swapping my carb and intake (and pan) over and I'll upgade to a .480 - .500 lift cam. Will this work with this type of 5.0 or do I need a GT 5.0 to make the larger cams work. 3000-6000 RPM?
Thanks for any and all advice.
Joe

This engine will be good for your 65 Mustang. I have a 5.0 from a 1992 Mustang in my 65. You can use the stock roller lifters with any size cam you want. Just make sure it is a roller cam. I'm using the Trick Flow stage 1 cam with 1.7 roller rockers. The GT40P heads flow a lot better than stock 351 heads. You will have to get special headers to fit these heads since the spark plugs are angled differently than normal 5.0 heads. You will have to address the 50 oz balance of the 5.0 engine by getting a 50 oz flywheel. You can have your current 28 oz rebalanced to 50. You'll also have to use your 289 timing chain cover since it has a hole for the oil dip stick and fuel pump. You'll have to plug the oil hole that is in the engine from the old oil dipstick. Also, you'll need to get a steel distributor gear to replace the iron gear that is currently on your distributor. This is needed for the steel roller cam. All this is worth it. I love my setup and it is very strong engine.

He'll have to get a gear for his distributor. The later model distributors had a different diameter shaft than the earlier ones.
