picking a cam for my 331

I got my heads in & the bottom end is here assembled so down to business. Here's the specifics:
68 mustang
10.3:1
AFR 185's w/ upgraded spring package (145#@1.82", 355#@1.25") also got the larger rocker studs.
Pro-Magnum rockers
Hooker Supers, probably will use 2.5" exhausts.
holley 750
victor jr.
t-5 tranny
8.8 rear w/4.10's & a locker
will be a weekend and show car & I'll take it to the strip for midnight mayhem on occasion, but no competition. I don't figure on spinning it over 6K, but it has a main girdle, do you think I'm safe going to 6,500 now & then? Not sure if the 5.0 block's Mexican or not. Hydraulic roller is what I'm looking for.

Are you going to run NITROUS???? That makes a big difference in cam choice.I also had a 331 that I ran before this 347 using the same cam!!! Both run with the same heads and cam with a 200 shot of nitrous!! The 347 doesn't shift past 5800 rpm's and makes 581 rwhp on the dyno!!

I would use a cam with duration @.050 in the 240-245 range.a custom cam would be the way to go. www.camresearchcorp.com.

No nitrous for now, but those numbers sure are sweet 581 RWHP? Damn. I think I'll be cool with 400 RWHP. Hoping the T5 & 8.8 will help a solid amount show up at the wheels.

I tried bringing up the cam research link & it's giving me trouble. I'll go do a web-search for 'em & see if I can find 'em that way.

I'd use a medium sized solid lifter grind. 6500 rpm should NOT be a problem for a properly built 331. You'll have valvetrain problems before you have any troubles out of the bottom end.

Speaking of valvetrain troubles, that engine has the potential to spin above the rpm where hydraulic rollers are comfortable. For street/strip, I'd choose a solid lifter around 236 @ 0.050" on the intake, maybe a tad more on the exhaust, and have it ground with a 108 to 110 degree lobe seperation.

Comp has a selection of solid lifter Xtreme Energy lobes they can build you a cam from. Just call them up and tell them which lobe you want on the intake and exhaust, and where you want to lobe seperation.

I'd also run 3" pipe back to 3" mufflers. To this connect a set of $99/pr MANDREL BENT Flowmaster 2.5" tailpipes, and make them removable by welding some of those three hole header rings to the muffler outlets, and connecting the tailpipes with ordinary header reducers. Good Luck!
