stock 302 rods were never good for much more than 5500 rpm, and will probably break no matter what you do to them if you go to 7500 rpm, I suggest getting a new set of rods ,the choice is up to you on which ones to purchase. check with each manufacturer on thier specs

What do you mean only 5500 rpm? There's people out there that run the stock rods over 8,000 rpm. I rev mine to 6000 regularly and have a 6,500 rpm redline when I really want to abuse it some. All I've done to them is put arp bolts in them. You can polish the edge of the beam where the forging lines are smooth, that will strengthen them some.

The weak part of stock rods are the bolts. Once they are replaced with a set of good ones (ARP) they seem to be capable of handling a lot more. Polishing and shotpeening the beams also helps, although at 7500 rpm, you're probably pushing your luck.

of all of the rods I've broken, the stock 302 hasn't been one of them. Great rods, crappy bolts. Put some good bolts in 'em and you're good to go. You'll break the block before the rods, at least that's been my experience. Went through that with a turbocharged 306 at over 20 psi boost....stock short block with exception of forged pistons and turbo-specific camshaft. 8600 RPM was the highest I ever saw, and that was on a burnout showing off to some friends.

The engine below used stock 289 rods that had ARP bolts installed. No polishing. Just good bolts and good machine work.

They saw close to 7000 rpm pretty much every time the car came out of the garage. When it went to the track, it went through dozens of nitrous bottles 200hp at a time at those rpms.

No problem. The rods are stronger than the crank and block.

Good Luck!

Same as what others have said.... I had stock rods, ARP bolts in them and whenever I raced turned 6500 every time. Lasted until I decided to go bigger, now my friend runs it at the same rpm's against me!

What everyone else has said.
Careful resizing after installing the ARP bolts, and they will handle just about anything.

Mine have standard ARP 190 000 psi bolts (not wavelocks) and a resize only have seen 7200 couple of times, and see 6600 or 6800 regularly depending on the rpm pill I fit on the day
