building a 428FE for my 1968 mustang

hey y'all, im plenty new here and i am looking for some good tips to build a motor for my mustang. I am looking to drive my car on the street, (and back and forth to the track), I have a 68 428 motor that i just bought, and i am hoping to put it into my mustang. I want it streetable, and capable of running in the 11's. Any ideas? Your input will be greatly appreciated!
P.S. I dont want to run nitrous to do it. Thanks once again,
-Doug

11's?... a street car, thats non-computer controlled; That's a tall order. Not impossible, but not as easy as you might think.

Today's, Old-tech engines are power houses compared to the originals. Better tires, better cams, carbs, heads..etc, make it a lot easier to build a street runner that would embarss the bracket cars of just a few years ago. But 11's are not just about horsepower, to run those numbers you will need the whole package. Transmission, gears, traction, suspension, heads, header (full length, 4-in-1)...maybe some weight reduction.

Yes a 428 will fit, it won't be easy to work on, but it will fit. You may want to look into triming the shock towers, sooner rather than later, to make it easier to fit and work on. Check the tech articles, on the home page...there is a build-up on a 1969 that details pretty much what you will need to do to run the numbers.

Be ready to open your wallet and cry in your beer a few times before it all comes to together. You can expect 13's - 12s without too much headache, then you need to get serious

It's a lot easier than it was just a couple years ago. Just look at Keith Craft Racing http://www.keithcraft.com
He'll sell you a complete motor for about 10k that will do the job. Check www.clubcobra.com for more info on his motors. It's more expensive to get into the 10's with an FE than with a 460 or 351, but there is nothing cooler (sound and looks).

You should be able to acheive your goal.If its a standard 428 and not a CJ or SCJ I would start with a head upgrade. The old CJ heads work pretty good or you can go with some of the new aftermarket aluminium heads which will also shave some wieght off the front end.The engine was a factory option so you can bolt it in with factory parts. Its a little tight but it fits. The FE's can use some help in the oiling department. The passage from the pump to the oil filter pad needs to be enlarged and the CJ style oil filter pad has much bigger and smoother passages. Also some restrictors to limit the oil to the rockers is a good idea.I would strongly recommend using a machine shop that has experience building FEs.There are lots of very fast super stock eliminator 428 mustangs out there. The key to having an 11 second "streetable" car will be in all the little details like getting it to hook up etc.Good luck
