Ratchet Style Column Shifter

Just wondering, has anyone tried to make a ratchet style column shifter? I have a 63 Fairlane I'm building, 4door, bench seat, 408, 3.73 posi etc, etc. and don't want to clutter up the floor where my wife puts her feet when we all go to church. I'm going with the AOD(was a 2 speed auto) and I'm wondering if I could mount the ratchet part of a shiftr to the side of the trans. and run a cable to the column shifter. I would have to work out some way of unlocking it to go to reverse. I know it sounds like a waste of time but "what's time to a pig"

it can be done. Nick Scavo(sp?) who ran a 65 impala in the fastest street car series(i think) modded his column shifter to a ratchet.

This won't help much, BUT, one of my old Torinos (which was a 'sleeper') I ran a reverse manual valvebody in WITH the stock column shifter.

It actually worked pretty good. I could slam the stick with my fist and it would go to second, then I'd have to pull back on it a little to get it in drive. Remember, instead of D 2 1, you're now 1 2 D with everything else being the same.

The fun part was watching somebody try to drive the car and never get out of second.

In the good old days, I took one from L1 to reverse and laid down some very impressive black marks taking off and stoping before the yoke and U joint broke in half. I then lived with the name Reverse for a long time. I later found out from a friend what can happen if the shaft breaks at the trans. with no loop in place, not a good thing. I later started using the star shifters. I'm very hung up on the Fairlane sleeper look these days though Mike
