Transmission cooler lines

I have a 67 Galaxie with 289 and an FMX Cruisomatic. The trans code on the build plate says X which equals "TRANS X = transmission type and shift location: FX SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic, column shift. Is this a C4 or C6 or neither? I am trying to get new trans cooler lines and can't seem to figure it out.
Thanks much.

Scott

FMX is neither a C4 or a C6 it is a bastard child. One of Fords attempt to change a good thing.

As far as I know there were only two basic models in 1967 Galaixe, C-6, behind the FE's, usually the 390 4-v or larger engines and the FMX for the rest.

Check out http://www.Inlinetube.com for stock or stainless steel pre-formed tansmission lines. (just click on "brake or fuel lines, then scroll down to ford, then Galaxie and pick the right year). There are probably other companies that sell them, so check around for alternatives and or price.

Cruis-o-matic, as mentioned often in the forum, was Fords generic term for automatic transmissions (along with Ford-o-matic, Merc-o-matic)..saved a lot of 'splain'en about which were better or the changes they made over the years.

Oops..I see what you meant, they don't seem to list the 289 combination for 67. You may need to call them and see if the 65-66 "c-4", is in fact the FMX?

Thanks for info. Inline tube is actually where I was trying to get the lines from, but he does not have the FMX template. Good news is that I can send him mine so he can make a template and he will only charge me materials cost for the lines.
Thanks again,
Scott

Why not use broke line?

Thats what i used for my C4 and its doing just fine.I got it all bent up and then took it back out and painted it and you cant tell the new lines i made from the ragged tired ones i pulled other than the new ones looking and being new.

That's interesting - I've always understood that the Cruis-o-matic was first name for the FMX?

Fordomatic
also known as Mercomatic and Cruisomatic

Was used 1951-68 in many Ford products. In 1953 for a three month period, they were used in Cadillacs after the Livonia, MI Hydramatic plant burnt to the ground. It was also used in some International and Dodge trucks and Checker Cabs. This was an hydraulically controlled rear wheel drive transmission. It had a cast iron case and either an aluminum or a cast iron bell housing. From 1951-57 it was a 2 speed transmission. In 1958 the Cruisomatic was introduced and was a 3 speed transmission, however many Ford products continued to use the 2 speed Fordomatic thru 1960. The medium case version was also known as the Mercomatic and was produced from 1951-68. The large case version was produced from 1958-65. In 1968 Ford came out with the FMX which eventually replaced all 3 versions, but almost no parts interchange. Similar to Borg-Warner BW8 and BW12, but few of the parts are interchangeable. 1968 was a cross-over year where the Fordomatic was used in some vehicles for part of the year before changing over to the FMX.

Rear cooler line is the cooler return line

The way I understand it...the type (forward speed, detents, valving etc) of transmission changed over the years, but the name stayed the same.

For those of you who want to retain your FMX transmissions; They are not as popular or have the current racing technology or heritage of the C-4, C-6 's taht supplanted them, but in their day they had a pretty good following. At the time they were the only performance Auto that Ford had, so a few people took the time and effort to make them work.

Here is a link to a story about a performance Cruisomatic buildup. Remember, all you have to do is remove and replace the bellhousing to fit the block you are using. Changing the Tail housing and / or appropriate driveshaft change will make up the length, transmission crossmember difference. Personally I prefer the C-6, but....your money your choice.
