331 Stroker, What pistons to use

I just got a 331 Stroker Crank.

Can I use a standard 302 Piston with a 3.25" stroke crank and 5.4" rods in a stock block? I want to get my final compression to about 11.5:1,without spending 700bucks on pistons. Can this be done in the300-450range with a hypereutectic piston?

All suggestions welcome, thanks

No. You'll need a 331 specific piston. KB has a hyper piston that fits - a search of this forum should turn up the number. I personally don't care for hypers but others use them quite sucessfully.

I agree forged is not that much more but at that compression would be much better suited to your app. Just my opinion but I will never use a hyper in any motor I build, its just that much better forged.

amen to that! After all, a Hyperutectic piston is nothing more than a standard cast piston....with the rings moved higher and it has more silicon content in the alloy. Other than that, they're just plain ol' cast pistons (heavy).

Part of the successes with the 331 kits are the light weight of the rotating/reciprocating assembly. Use Cast or hyper pistons and you are back to having a much heavier assembly. Sometimes, with those heavy ol' pistons, Mallory metal is needed to balance the crank....and we all know that stuff might as well be gold.

That said, if you can't afford the extra $150 or thereabouts for forged pistons, the Hyper's will work fine. You'll just sacrifice a little extra power and RPM.

Some argue the hupereutectic alloy is more insulating than straight aluminum and so reflects more heat back into the combustion chamber creating a more efficient burn. Also since they conduct less easily they get fewer hot spots than forged pistons and can help detonation.

Some very good info on Hyper pistons. KB makes heat treated hypers...strong and excellent thermal characteristics. They can't be compared to conventional cast aluminum by any means.

By the way, the kb-silvolite web site will guide you to the piston you need for your 331, hyper or forged.

I used a flat top SRP piston for my 331.
