Question about DIY porting

I just started porting a set of e7's a few days ago. I've gotten the exhaust bumps taken care of and I'm about to start on the bowl work, but I've got a question first. Do I need to trim the valve guides so they are shorter (don't stick out as far from the roof of the port) or do I just make them thinner and contour everything? How could I go about making them shorter if I wanted to?

Question about DIY porting

I've read pretty much everything here on this site as well as on diyporting.com. The write up on diyporting says to be careful not to let the carbide bit slip into the valve guide. My question was regarding how to shave the valve guide bosses down without causing damage to the opening.

Question about DIY porting

Are you going to send the heads out for new guides when you're done? Or do you want to do the least damage possible and reuse the heads as-is?

If you're redoing the guides I would grind them down and tell the machinist not to extend the new guide past the point on the head at which you've ground the vg boss.

Question about DIY porting

Ok, so you did your homework before starting. Good job.

If you shorten the length of the valve guide in the bowl, have a machine shop install new valve guides per the comment above. If you don't shorten the valve guide, then you may get by without having a machinist involved. Personally, I'd shorten the guides and grind the bowls so there's a tear-drop shape around the guide boss (like AFR's). Also, if you're grinding the sides of the bowls, be very careful around the valve seat. You don't want to put any cutter marks on the seat that have to be ground out...that's taking life out of the head. Hope this helps. Post some pics of your before and after work!

Question about DIY porting

I was hoping to skip a trip to the machininst, but I also want to get the best possible results for the p&p. So, right now it looks like I'm going to go ahead and grind the bosses down. No reason to only half-ass it, right?
