Coolant in the oil...

I posted this in the Latemodel Tech board also, But I know more people frequent this board so I dropped it here to. If this isnt allowed, please remove and accept my apology.

A friends car (93 Mustang) has a 306 with Trick Flow TW heads, Trick Flow Track Heat intake, F-cam, and all the other obligatory stuff.
*Actually when the following episode happened he had a Edelbrock upper intake with a Typhoon lower.

A little while back, he installed an electric fan. Well, it quit working one day and the temp creeped up. He said the needle wasn't pegged, but it got hot for a few minutes.

Since then he has been getting coolant in the oil.
So he was doing some other work to the car, and had the upper intake off. Well with this Edelbrock, a nut and washer go inside the intake to hold it down. Apperantly the washer made it's way down into cylinder #4. He didn't realize it at the time. The car got put back together and started. As you can guess, it made quite a racket.

So the right head got removed, cleaned out the debris, Actually there was no damage to the head or piston, put everything back together, new head gasket, Still getting coolant in the oil.

He did notice milk in the lifter valley when the lower intake was off. So he figured the Typhoon lower was warped causing a leak between the intake and head. So he got a new Trick Flow track heat and installed it.

Coolant loss was minimized. Definetly not as bad as before, but there is still a problem.

He noticed if he drives the car easy, it holds the coolant. Hit the gas a couple times, he's got green oil...

We're out of ideas without tearing the whole motor down... Don't want to do that right now.

Sorry this got so long, if anyone made it to this point, do you have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Coolant in the oil...

I could be wrong, but I would think head-gasket maybe?

I would reinstall some new intake gaskets.

Did you retorque the heads after getting it warmed up ? and after the fiasco was the head checked for warpage? New head bolts ,head could be lifting, installed with oil on threads? hardened washers? All the joyous things to consider when a problem like this come up

Also, if the threads weren't chased there could be stuff in there leading to a false torque reading.

probably a head gasket problem. My 302 did the same thing, it was lifting the heads off the block. If I idled it around it would run all day, if I got on it once it would blow coolant out the overflow and all over the road. What fixed it was victor reinz performance head gaskets and arp bolts.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm pretty convinced it's the left head. But he's just been reluctant to tear everything down again. The top end of the motor's only been apart like 4 times in the last two months...
Also I don't get a chance to tear into a motor very often so I forget to think of those little things like chasing the threads and installing the bolts with lube... (no, I haven't worked on the motor yet, so he can't blame me )

I'll pass the info along to him and hopefully we can get this thing solved.

The shame is the motor runs great at idle and normal driving. And if you get on it, it has incredible power. It's just that green oil that keeps popping up.

Maybe one or both heads became warped? The next time you pull them for the head gasket I'd have a shop look at them to consider if the need a thousandth milled off. The gray oil with coolant cannot be good for the bearings even if he keeps changing the oil.

Just wondering about this, How much do you think compression will be affected by shaving a couple thousandths off the heads?
