crank sprocket won\'t go on scat stroker crank!!

Goes on about an inch then binds... I've tried the new sprocket, the old sprocket and an old 289 sprocket... no joy!

Just to see I pulled out the original ford 351w crank and all three sprockets go on fine. A little snug... yes but they all work.

I've never heard of anyone having this with a SCAT crank... I don't want to tear down the short block to machine the crank snout, should I just have the sprocket reamed out at a local machine shop?

I had the exact same experience, the crank key was sitting a bit proud, I think I had to tweak the key with a file.

If anything its a bit wide... but it's tricky trying to narrow the key whilst it's in the crank

I would just carefully sand/file the new sprocket. Had to do this when installing a Rollmaster timing set on a stroker crank recently. Take your time and check the fit often.

I had the same problem. Took some light sanding and I also pulled the key out and filed it a wee bit.

Both good ideas but obviously I'm missing something...

1) When I try to widen the keyway in the sprocket with a file it tends to round the inner edges next to the crank and not further near the teeth where I need it widened... Is there a better tool?

2) That key doesn't seem to come out of the crank... must be some kinda press-fit.

1. You need a file with teeth on the side that will fit into the groove.
2. The key is a woodruff key, biscuit-shaped. they're a tight fit but not pressed.

Polish the crank nose a bit with 400 or 600 grit paper, hit with some WD40, and heat the crank gear in the oven for about 15 minutes at 300 degrees. It should fall into place then.

got it... took a 'triangular' file to the sprocket keyway. 20 minutes work and it goes on now. Not easily, but it does.

BTW: the comp cams install guide says I don't have to worry about camshaft endplay because there's a retainer (thrust plate) on this engine. Maybe I'll see what the actual endplay is (it seems fairly large) but somehow I'm not comfortable just ignoring it.
