351c-2v and oil pump shaft install

i just got my 71 Torino motor rebuilt. A 351c-2v 60 over. I didn't install the oil pump shaft rod. The oil pan is on now and the engine installed. Is there a EASY way to get the shaft in without dropping the pan?

you could try a long rod with a magnet on the end, and just fish it down into the thing. You also might see if you can get the rod to stick in the distributor, then just install the dizzy.

Magnet on a stick is about the only way. AND - without the retainer clip, it more than likely will end up in the pan should you need to pull the distributor.

**Only use this method if you absolutely have to -- Engine already in car, etc **

Clean out the end of the distributor shaft and the oil pump drive with carb cleaner.

Then cram a load of RTV into the bottom of the distributor shaft.

Stick the oil pump drive shaft up there and let it dry.

Now you can stab the distributor and the oil pump shaft at the same time.

If the engine is just sitting on the stand, take off the oil pan and do it right. It'll cost 15 bucks in gaskets, but it'll be worth it.

Greg

I've done that before, and I agree if you can drop the pan and do it right, but if thats not an option.

Then heres what I did, take a piece of paper or plastic from a sandwich bag and put in over the shaft then jam the shaft up into the dizzy. make sure it really snug, should work.... just remember if you ever have to pull the dizzy, that shaft is coming with it so be very careful.

Or

take a chisel and score one of one of the hex sides of the shaft to make if fit in the dizzy nice and tight...

either way good luck... Remember dropping the pan is always the best solution..

You might as well just undo the mounts and jack up the motor and drop the pan! If it falls off the long magnet, it'll end up down in the pan anyways. I would'nt use RTV personally, it can get hard inside a hot motor and ruin engine parts, instead, try petroleum jelly.
But I think I'd just drop the pan and pump and install.
You said its .060" over??

You'll have to let us know how well the engine works being 0.060" over. A lot of people say that going 0.040" over on a 351c is pushing your limits. Good luck and I hope it works out for ya.

cobrar is running 0 351c 60 over in the high tens and driving it on the street for the last 3 years and revs it 7400 rpm and it still has 80 psi oil pressure, its all in how you build them, i guess he knows how to build them by the look of it!!

I haven't added oil yet and I was going to prime it until oil came out the heads, that is why I haven't added the pump shaft. It was also60 over b4 the rebuild. Ran good
