at what hp levels are stock fuel systems no good?

hey guys,

i'm still in the process of getting my 351c engine built, ran out of money after buying all the performance parts and still saving up to buy the pistons and conrods...but what i was wondering is that i've still got the stock fuel system on the 1980 falcon, i havnt measured it but the fuel line looks around 3/8 or smaller, and its just the mechanical fuel pump on the block

question is what fuel system will i need to run when i get the new engine built? it'll have around 400-420 hp and probably rev to 6500-6800rpm

will i need a 1/2inch line and holley or similar electric fuel pump? do you reckon the stock fuel system will still cut it?

3/8 fuel line is good to about 400hp. Measure yours and if it is 5/16" then certainly replace it. Also make sure your sending unit is good for at least 3/8" too.

I make just shy of 400RWHP at just shy of 7k RPM with 3/8 line and mechanical pump on my cleveland stroker so roughly 525-550 FWHP (I use an AOD and 9 inch rear). I beleive my fuel system to be maxed.

Make sur its not pinched anywhere. My old system was and it could not keep up with a 289 over 4000 rpm.

youll find the falcon is a 5/16 line,i had the same situation, youll need to upgrade,my ltd started starving for fuel because of the stock system so im changing over to a 1/2 inch line with electric pump-if youre going to be making up around 400hp the stock system wont cut-it

If you haven't, take a look at this article on fuel lines:
