Which O2 sensor to use...

OK... thanks to all for the help finding the right tranny bolts. Now: On to the next thing!

I'm thinking of putting a couple of O2 sensors into the exhaust headers so I can see how rich/lean I'm running and tune accordingly. Eventually it'd be nice to wire them up to a pair of A/F meters but lets start at the beginning.

The engine/trans headers aren't in the car yet so now is the easiest time to weld up some O2 bungs and find some matching sensors. The car is carb'd; NOT EFI and will likely never be EFI so interfacing with a particular vendor's system is not an issue.

Where do I start? Is there a standard size bung for O2 sensors? Is there a 'standard' sensor?

14mm seems to be a standard size, same size and thread as our spark plugs.

Run of the mill o2 sensor I used has same thread as a sparkplug.

Just make a pit stop at Midas they will have a pile of the weld in o2 bungs. The Midas guy tossed me one and said have a good day.

Search back in the forums for this info...

I went to Autozone and looked up at least 20 different O2 sensors and purchased based on price. They vary from 35-$$$ bucks. Look for heated ones. I am running O2 sensors from an '88 F-150 with 302.

The bungs are anywhere from free to $10 apiece. You can find kits on Summit but like the guy above said, a nice muffler shop will throw them in for free. My shop must have had 1,000 of them sitting in a large box.

I used one out of a 94 Exploder. It's a heated sensor - more consistant readings. It'll still be hit or miss. The wide bands require controllers AFAIK and can't be wired directly to a meter.

OK... "wide bands" can't be wired directly to a meter. Good to know...

Which kind (preferably heated) CAN be wired directly to a meter?

Hey:

You should check out the carb-tuning story in the July issue of Car Craft. Lots of good O2 sensor stuff in there....
