Cylinder Head & Cam Advise Needed

Hi Guys, this is my first post on this forum so here goes.

Can anyone advice please on cylinder heads & cam I require for the following:

84' 351 Windsor, (stroked to 396)
Scat 9000 series 396 crankshaft
Scat 351 H-Beam rods
TRW dished hyper pistons with moly rings

The engine will not go above 6500rpm & I want it to be drivable & produce a good even torque curve upto 6500rpm. I would like the idle to be slightly lumpy on tickover just for the effect though. - Any thoughts?
This engine will go into a replica Cobra & will be used for fast street & occasional track days.
I need an assembled aluminium cylinder head with at least 60cc.
I would love to install AFR 205's but they are outside my budget!!
Many thanks,

Martyn UK

Welcome to the dark side of the Ford.

Have you been thinking of porting your heads, I did mine(check my signature)
I can feel a big improvement, it's a diy, it's (nearly) free, only time consuming.

You'll need more than ported stock heads to feed 393 cubic inches. Ported stock heads are barely enough for a mild 302... they won't be enough for an engine of your size trying to make power at 6500 rpm.

The cylinder heads are where the power is made. My advice is to start saving some more money for heads that are capable of feeding the beast.

Remember, you're feeding a 'big block' sized engine through small block cylinder heads. You've got to go big to do the engine justice.

The Victor Jr. heads from Edelbrock are also good and a little less expensive. The AFR 185's are really good as well, and should be plenty big, and less expensive than the 205's.

You'll need a Holley 950HP series carb, or something similar. These have a 750 sized carburetor body with an 850 base plate.... all streamlined for better flow. They provide the torque and velocity of a 750 and the top end of an 850. (They don't really flow 950cfm, it's just the name) BIGS can do you up a nice custom unit if you want to spend the $$$$$.

As for a cam, you'll want something around 240-245 @ 0.050" on the intake, maybe a little more on the exhaust... and around a 108-110 degree lobe seperation. Personally, I like solid lifter cams. You can build a nice custom unit from the Comp Cams line of Xtreme Energy solid lifter lobes.

As for an intake, either the Edelbrock Air-Gap or Victor Jr. would be my first choices.

Be SURE to have a FREE flowing exhaust on the car, or the engine's true potential will never be met.

Good Luck!

I understand your application, but how much power do you want to make?

What is you budget for heads?

Because heads & the right cam is where your power can be made.

I expect about 600 hp from my 408/AFR 205 combo running a solid flat tappet cam.

If you don't need that much power, you can certainly make some good hp to move that Cobra.

Hi,

Thanks for the info - much appreciated,

To answer your question Joe; I will be happy for the engine to make 450-500hp but want a quality build. My budget on heads is $2000 for the set, (give or take a few $$). I would be willing to buy a used, quality set of AFR185's - but as you know second hand AFR's are as rare as Rocking Horse **** as we say in England.
Any info apptreciated.

Thanks,

Martyn

I would imagine you could get a vender here in the states to work with you on the heads. A $2k budget should get the job done fine.

If you would like some info on AFR and sales/shipping to England contact Brian at www.adperformance.com

I bought my AFR 205s from him (along with my stroker kit) and I can assure you his pricing is excellent along with his customer service.
