global vs coilover vs m2 re: wheel/tire clearance...

after all the money invested trying to get the best while keeping her stock frame i am wondering how much more tire i coulda fit had i kut the towers out and went m2 or coilover. looks like you need 17 or 18 inch rims for it to matter cause the upper arm and ball joint on all setups are in the way(on the shopping list). so i want to hear your input on going as wide as possible, ive cosidered kutting a portion of the tower and bracing them further, or my other option kould be flares and wider stance...a masterpiece in progress 66 fairlane 500 2dr postless. thanks

global vs coilover vs m2 re: wheel/tire clearance...

i guess no one has kick ass suspension and stock frame, i think the only advantage of m2 or coilover compared to what i have would be bumpsteer adressed and possibly wider wheel clearances..i know the andretti 66 had coilovers...a foot wide tires w/ 15in. rims.
im running progressive rate coils, spherical global lca, global tubular uca, spherical adjustable strut rods, roller perches, uca lowered 1-3/4in., eccentric eliminators, now working on the rear and engine, and trying to find bumpsteer kits(which i may fab myself since i cant find any, so any tips would help) this my 66 handles like a porsche as is, i love it but need reinforced spindles and a few other things to be safe at 170mph but ANY help or tips or info would really help...bueller bueller/?!

I don't know much about the m2 setup, but i'm going to be buying the global west neg. wedge design setup here before to long. I also am getting rack and pinion, so I hope all that money is well spent. I know it's not going to handle like a new car, but I want some improvement over what I have now.

How do you like those progressive rates coils, what spring rate did you go with?
Notable diffidence with those roller perches, who did you get them from?
170?

Sweet, I'm putting a set of those perches on a 64 Falcon Sprint, swaping out the entire front end, was considering the 620 coils but these progressives have got my intrest up. The more I read about them the more I like them. Cost twice as much but hell, if they can smoth out the road and tighten up in a turn they might be worth a shot.
Anybody heard a down side to these springs?

I started with 620's on my 65, then went to the progressive rate springs. IMO, the 620's were over-kill with the 1" sway bar. I switched to the progressive rate springs and the ride was much less harsh. I also noticed that my corner exits were much more controled with WOT...less throttle induced oversteer.

Here's a pic from the web of some DIY roller spring perches:

Note: If you make a set of these, you'll have to pinch the tubing so it'll be easier to get the nuts on the bottom of the shocks.

global vs coilover vs m2 re: wheel/tire clearance...

globalwest says they h8 progressives cause by the time you get to the higher rate its too late on hard turns, but my 66 flane im in luck (good or bad) i like it...i used 67stang sb coils and 2 coils on top are touching so im alreaady at intermediate rate, but when i nearly jump her she lands so perfect...lot of clearance too..different unsprung and compressed hieghts..i found this out later, but it works well, i would have had custom progressives made had i known this...but had the spring been any taller i would not be able to align it, would have had to kut them...thank god, it was alot of work and the 4th time ive done it on this car, with the roller perches i could barely get the shock nuts on, it was so difficult i didnt believe they were going to get on there, lack of finger/tool room...

Also hard to predict what a progressive spring's rate is going
to be at any one point in time. Dynamically in a turn, the
changing rate makes sticking to "the line" a lot more of a
challenge. That was a staple techline response when I worked
as GM at Global.
