Splash shields needed?

Im putting lincoln mk VII rear disk brakes on my car using a ultrastang.com kit. Everything is going great, except the only splash shields I could find were ebay peices that are rusted pretty bad.

Ive wire wheeled them and painted them, but the pitting is still very bad, and it would be a shame to have to use them along with my new calipers and such.

They are not structural to the breaks at all, and I cant find any reason that I HAVE to use them.

Am I asking for trouble by leaving them off?
