Convertible Top Installation on 83-93 Mustangs

I am getting ready to replace the top on my 92 LX and was wondering ( hoping ? ) if someone knows of a website that has a step-by-step walkthrough on replacing a convertible top on a 83 - 93 Mustang ? The instructions that came with my new Electron-Top are rather vague, to say the LEAST.......

Thanks !

I had a 1992 LX 5.0 and got the top replaced under warranty!!

I watched the guy every step of the way and wondered to myself....WHAT IN THE WORLD WERE THE FORD ENGINEERS THINKING????

They must have spent a year designing this abomination and was it ever difficult to do....YES!!!

I'd find a competent top shop and have it done so you have some sort of recourse in the event it leaks or you have other problems!!

What I remember is it uses a bunch of staples in the bar over the windshield and a PITA to line up as well as making it tight when you put it up....simply trial & error....mostly error!!

Good Luck!!

I attempted to do this on my 93 GT about a year and a half ago. It was more upholstry work than anything. It looks ok from 50' at 50mph! Lot's of wrinkles. I used a haynes manual to do mine.

I have been installing tops for almost 20 years and if you do not know how to do it pay someone who does, you would not believe what I have seen when someone who has never done it tries to install a top. The top and window on the 83 to 90 go on a little different then the 90 to 92 since from 90 there is no wireon on the back of the top above the window, the 83 to 90 is a little easier to replace then the 90 to 93 and if you want to get most of the wrinkles out you must have a steamer to get them out or you can have a mess. Try this link,I was going to try it myself but was missing a lot of pieces so had someone else do it. Bad choice should have tried it myself, had to take part of it apart and redo it. Better now, not perfect but better, good luck. www.fordsunlimited.com/tech/convertible.htm#table

I did my 85 myself and in the end it looked pretty good but it took about a month of stretch, let it sit, stretch, let it sit. I would never do one again as long as I could afford to have it installed. Its not hard to put the top on but it is hard to put it on right. If you do decide to attempt it yourself you should get a box of bandaids and ibuprofin for your sore fingers and knees. At least one reliable freind to help preferably two.
