How to lower front end on 66 mustang?

Just bought some new tires and rims for my 66 coupe and the front end sits way too high.Whats the best way to lower the front end on these cars without causing major geometry problems?

Start with a 1" drop coils first.... their cheap and an easy to install.... then if it is still too high... take a 1/2 coil out until you get the desired hieght.

I agree...A set of coils at Mustangs Plus are $69. for a 620 rate, and thats a GREAT set. They are 1" lower than stock and are LOT'S better. If you cut the coils... one half of a coil cut = 1"drop.I'd also do the Shelby drop when you install the new coils...the Shelby mod is ABOUT 1".

I am going to put the global west arms on my car and do the full lowering too, how much does that lower the car?

I can't give you the exact number, but when I did the GW uppers/lowers and 620 springs, my car lowered just about 1", maybe a bit more.

A 'negative wedge' kit uses wedge shaped spacers that angle the ball joints so they do not bind when the upper control arm is lowered. This allows the arm to be lowered even more than the regular Shelby mod, for much better camber gain as the suspension is depressed.

This tucks the top of the tire inward when the suspension is compressed, making the car corner much better, wear the tires better on curvy roads, and makes the tire clear the fender lip better... as it tips IN instead of OUT under compression.

It's just the Shelby mod... taken further. The Shelby mod is limited because the ball joints bind if the control arm is lowered too much. These wedges angle the joint to keep them from binding.... which allows them to be lowered further. The kits come with a METAL template for re-drilling the holes in the shock tower.

The Shelby mod will lower the car around a half inch, the Negative Wedge kit will lower it close to a full inch.

Good Luck!

I installed the negative wedge kit on my car, and the total drop was closer to 2" than 1". I have the 1" drop springs, but I put the poly 1" spacers on it cause it was too low. Sitting still the very top of the tire is tucked into the fender. (as in, you cant see the tread) Stock gives you about 1.5"-2" clearance tire to fender. It was relatively easy to install.

And, I've never had the tires rub the fenders because like n2omike said, the geometry is much improved. They've bottomed out on the bumpstop once, but that was a particularly nasty pothole.

I'm running P235's in the front.

The negative wedge system is what global west uses.

Global West doesn't use a negative wedge kit, they make an upper control arm that is shorter and has the ball joint at an angle. Their UCA has to be installed around 35mm lower then the original UCA.
Global West claims their 'negative roll system' is better then anything else on the market, but I doubt you can actually feel a difference betwen their UCA, and an original UCA with a wedge kit unless you're going to a track day.

BTW, you can modify your original UCA's so you can drop them more then 1" without the need for a wedge kit. If you do a search on the vintage-mustang forum you'll find that some have cut a wedge from their UCA to be able to tilt the end of the UCA inward. Thereby putting the ball joint at an angle and shortening the UCA length slightly.
